Obituary
Ann McNulty (previously Ann Sill) Oct 5, 1924 – Feb 8, 2025
Ann McNulty passed away on February 8, 2025, at the Canora Gateway Lodge. Against all odds, Ann reached her 100th birthday in October 2024. We are grateful that she is free of her failing body and may now rest in peace. She leaves us with many wonderful memories and so much more.
Ann was born in 1924 in the Tway/Tarnopol (Wakaw) area to John and Anastasia Swicheniuk. As a young girl, Ann’s chores included helping her father with beekeeping and warming stones for the sauna that he made available to locals. She often credited her lack of arthritis to the many stings she got when moving bees.
Later in life, she moved to Kuroki with her brother and found work in the general store, candling eggs. Here she met George Sill, and they married in 1947. Initially they lived in a « tarpaper » shack and together they broke land for farming and raised four children. She was very proud of her huge garden, and rightly so, as she produced an abundance of fruit and vegetables for her growing family. Her beloved garden was the mainstay of life on the prairies as were the weekly homemade bread, buns and pies. During several of these years, Ann was also employed at the Kuroki Elementary school as a
custodian.
These tasks were made more difficult for Ann when shortly after their first son was born in 1953, she lost the use of her right leg. Diagnosed with MS which later went into remission, she crawled together with her young son to tend to the garden. Her life was a testament to tenacity and determination which we will always admire and pull strength from.
Sadly, husband George Sill passed in 1994. With the help of friends and her daughter, Ann was able to remain on the farm.
Through the next couple of years, Anne returned to meetings at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s witness, where she met and married Lorne McNulty in 1996. During their time together, Ann and Lorne ventured to Germany to visit Ann’s son even as her mobility faltered.
After Lorne’s sudden passing in 2005, Ann was determined to remain on her beautiful and beloved farm. She remained there until 2007 and then moved to Park Place in Canora until 2012 when her handicap determined she would be served best by becoming a resident of the Gateway Lodge. We will be forever grateful for the care given to her there.
Ann is predeceased by four brothers, her sister, half-sister and their spouses except for 2 sisters-in-law; Mary (Charlie) Swicheniuk of Saskatoon and Jean (nee Sill) Prince of Spruce Grove, Alberta. Left to share her memory are Darrell (Carol) Sill of Canora, Don (Connie) Sill of Sturgis, Sheryl Mottram (Myron) of Kelvington, Leon (Mary) Sill of Ketchen, her 9 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great grandchild.
We will especially remember Ann for the sparkle of her deep blue eyes, her easy laughter and witty comebacks!
Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to MS Canada as tokens of remembrance. Arrangements have been entrusted to LESON’S FUNERAL HOME, Canora, Sk.
