Obituary of Joseph « Joe » Sidney Ferrar
Joe passed on February 6, 2025 at the age of 69 at the Saint John Regional Hospital and is resting peacefully joining three close friends that he lost in recent years – David Culley, Ed Tracey and Jack Cunningham. He enjoyed talking with them every day and no doubt they are now reminiscing about the many projects they took on or planning the next fishing or hunting adventure. Born on February 14, 1955 in Saint John, New Brunswick he was the son of the late Sidney and Elizabeth (O’Hearon) Ferrar.
Joe valued his many friendships from the Saint John Police Force where he worked for 33 years. He worked in a number of areas which included walking the beat, Youth Division, Traffic Division and the Identification Section where he served for 11 years never hesitating to accept any challenge presented to him. During his final years with the Force he served as a Sergeant and was eager to take on the daily tasks that were presented while always providing support to his colleagues and the citizens of Saint John that were experiencing a difficult situation. After retirement, he worked at Fitzpatrick’s Funeral Home for several years where he formed a close friendship with Gary Smith. Joe was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 937.
When not working Joe always had a project on the go, especially smoking salmon. People were always asking « When will you be smoking salmon again, can I give you some to smoke for me »? He loved doing it and was even happier sharing it with friends. When not doing up the salmon he was busy giving Katie and Mark a hand with a project at their house or planning the next fly-fishing trip to the Miramichi or even more importantly making preparations for the next moose hunting excursion. Joe never complained about the cold weather in the winter because once the Kennebecasis River was safe for ice fishing he had his ice fishing shack set up. A lot of good times were enjoyed by Jackie, Katie, Mark and many friends who were always trying to get one bigger than what Joe had landed.
Joe and Jackie had a number of exciting trips in their motorhome which included travelling to the Yukon and while in a campground at Whitehorse they watched grizzly bears wander about freely, in the Northwest Territories an overnight stay at Fort Laird gave them the opportunity to see how the Indigenous families made their birch bark baskets and finally in Hyder, Alaska hours were spent watching grizzly bears and black bears feasting on chum salmon in Fish Creek. Many trips were also made to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where they enjoyed visiting the Amish farms and purchased a number of their unique handmade quilts. Newfoundland was another favourite vacation spot which included the excitement of seeing massive icebergs and a road trip on the Labrador Highway to Happy Valley Goose Bay catching the passenger ferry for a weeklong trip along the coast of Labrador visiting the five Indigenous communities. Joe always said it was an eye-opening experience to see what life was like for the Indigenous families living in these communities. A trip to Ireland was made with Joe having the opportunity to post the Saint John Police Force crest with other police force crests from all over the world in a number of pubs including the Temple Bar in Dublin.
The cottage in the Cambridge Narrows was another favourite spot for Joe and Jackie with many BBQ’s enjoyed with family and friends. Above all, Joe was a family man who lived life to the fullest and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Joe is survived by his wife, Jacqueline (Sullivan); daughter, Katie Ferrar (Mark Carpenter); brothers, Edward and Mark (Heather), sisters-in-law, Margaret Sullivan and Carol Sullivan; nieces and nephews, Kerri, Debbie (Dee), Jennie, Michael, Jacob, Evan and Mark as well as numerous cousins across Canada and the United States. Besides his parents Joe was predeceased by his in-laws, Harold and Florence Sullivan and brother-in-law, Bernard Sullivan.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude for the exceptional care provided to Joe by Dr. Le, Dr. McKnight and the staff of 4CN of the Saint John Regional Hospital.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) with visitation on Monday, February 10, 2025 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at 12:10 PM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Interment will take place in the Spring at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Golden Grove.
The family asks that no flowers be sent due to allergies. Donations may be made to Lakewood Headstart, a non-profit organization providing food and clothing to those in need in the outlying communities of east Saint John. Joe took great pride in gathering and making donations to this organization over the years.
