Brian Kenneth Newman was born in Killam, Alberta, and passed away in Vancouver, British Columbia, on January 8, 2025, at the age of 77.
Although Brian was born in Alberta, he spent most of his life in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Brian grew up in east Vancouver and in 1966, Brian followed in his father’s footsteps and began his 35-year career with Air Canada as a “ramp rat,” a role he performed with pride and dedication. It was during his early days at Air Canada that Brian noticed a lovely woman working at Cara Food Services. That young woman, Kathy, became the love of his life. They married in 1969, welcomed their cherished daughter, Tammy, and shared 55 wonderful years together.
Throughout his career, Brian worked in various roles, including in cargo and as a lead on the ramp, where he thrived in a job that allowed him to work with a variety of people. His kind and easygoing nature left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Brian had a deep passion for travel and adventure. After retiring in 2003, he and Kathy embraced the opportunity to explore the world, traveling to new destinations each year. They enjoyed snowbirding in their motorhome, journeying across Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
An avid skier, Brian spent countless hours on the slopes throughout his life. In retirement, he decided to share his passion by becoming a ski instructor at Whistler Blackcomb mountain, teaching children and participating in the adaptive ski program for disabled individuals. He also proudly volunteered at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, where he witnessed Canada win its first Olympic gold on home soil. As part of his volunteer work, Brian drove several legendary hockey players for Canada House, an experience he treasured.
Brian’s warmth, empathy, and humor made him a magnet for others. He had a natural ability to connect with people, always ready with a smile or a joke, and he made friends wherever he went.
Brian lived a full and adventurous life, rich with experiences and surrounded by love. He had no regrets and leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and a life well-lived.
