SARGEANT, Bryan Glenn
April 30, 1947 — December 12, 2024
It is with heavy hearts and profound grief that we announce the passing of Bryan Glenn Sargeant, who was born April 30, 1947 in Ottawa, Ontario. He passed at 77 years of age in Kelowna General Hospital on December 12th, 2024, after a hard fought 6 week battle with organ failure. Bryan will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
His family held him tight as he passed into the next life. We really appreciated all the friends and family who visited Bryan in the hospital to cheer him on in his efforts to survive, but it wasn’t meant to be.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Ruby Sargeant and his children Glenn (Sherry) Sargeant, Terry Zuest, Rob (Erin) Zuest, and Lisa (Robert) Wachs. Also, here to miss him are his grandchildren Branden Romans and partner Anthea McCaig, Brie-Lynn Sargeant, Makenna Zuest, and Corbyn Wachs. He is survived by his sisters Glenna, Lynne & Wendy and their spouses & children. Bryan was sadly predeceased by his oldest son Bryan Jr. and grandsons Chad and Ayden.
Bryan moved to Chilliwack in 1956 and drove logging trucks for Sargeant Trucking, his father’s company, until he decided to run a bowling centre. In 1982, he purchased his first centre, Big Country Lanes in 100 Mile House. A few years later, he sold it & bought Galaxy Bowl in Abbotsford. In 1986/87, he co-owned Willowbrook Lanes in Langley for a year along with his good friend, Bob Randall.
He met Ruby in 1991 in Abbotsford at Galaxy Bowl, and they moved to Kelowna in 1992 to purchase Valley Lanes Bowling Centre & Corner Pin Pub. While they had Valley, Bryan & Ruby added a second centre in Westbank, co-owned with his sister Wendy. During this time, Bryan took a 3-year position as General Manager of Kelowna’s McCurdy Bowl. Bryan was also serving on numerous Provincial & National Bowling Boards during this time, so Ruby kept everything going on the home front & their bowling business. They owned Valley Lanes until 2009 when they moved their bowling business to Capri Bowling Lanes. While at Capri, he acquired a Bowling Part Sales business & became the distributor for Western Canada. Bryan excelled at bowling equipment maintenance & took great pride & enjoyment in his centres’ upkeep. He was relied on for advice for maintenance from many other centres.
Bryan & Ruby sold their final bowling business in December 2023 and were retired for a year, before Bryan passed.
Bryan is a Bowl Canada Hall of Famer and a legend in the bowling industry. For decades, Bryan has been extremely well known, and deeply respected, by friends all over Canada. He held just about every position in the Canadian bowling industry, from bowler to coach to proprietor, and moving on to lend his leadership and knowledge to represent Bowl BC on its Board of Directors for several years. As a BC rep, he garnered national attention and was scooped up to represent Bowl Canada, which he did in every position possible, including a 4 year (2002-2006) stint as Bowl Canada President, becoming the first to hold the office for more than 2 years in its long history. Through his term as Bowl Canada President, Bryan represented our industry incredibly well, having great meetings and relationships with sponsors, marketers, and Presidents and Vice Presidents of TSN and CBC. Always an ambassador for our sport and industry, his people skills opened doors for the association and its members. Bryan was a part of a group that reformed the Bowling Federation of Canada back in 1999-2000. His involvement in BFC saw him go on to hold the BFC President’s office from 2004 to 2012, again a record 9-year term in that position. It was the trust all sides had in him that kept him there, along with his work ethic and desire to do the best for the bowling community he loved.
Bryan had many interests including his family, bowling, golfing, and car shows. Bryan & Ruby travelled extensively to conferences & enjoyed many vacations in their time together. He was a member of a few Corvette Clubs & also the Kelowna Golf & Country Club from 1992 until he passed. He made lifelong friends thru these memberships & his 41 years in the bowling industry.
The family would also like to thank the amazing staff at KGH for their kind and compassionate care for Bryan & our entire family. They were amazing.
A Celebration of Life will take place in April by RSVP only. Please reach out to Ruby if you wish to attend.
