Blanche Johnston Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Blanche Johnston on December 29, 2024, after a lengthy struggle with COPD.
Blanche was born in Fort McLeod, Alberta on July 23, 1939, into a large family that soon moved to Arrow Creek, British Columbia, where Blanche was raised and went to school. Early memories that Blanche shared of these times were of hard times and hard work. Blanche left the family home when she was 17 years old, and moved to Calgary, Alberta, where she worked at Burns, and met her husband of 50 years, Robert (Bob) Johnston. Blanche is survived by her three daughters Dawneen, Kim (Kyle), and Wendy; one sister, Madeline (Meaghan); grandchildren Ashley, Bryan, Robert, Keith, Andy, Meaghan, Matthew, Tyler, Kayla and Ian Alexander; and great grandchildren Aiya-Rose, Ezekiel, Anna Mae and Odeya. Blanche is also survived by close friend Jenny Ronnie (Sheldon, Brodie and Nash), whom she considered another beloved granddaughter. Blanche is pre-deceased by her loving husband Bob; and her only son Ian; as well as her mother (Valida) and father (Henry Daignault); as well as eight of her ten siblings.
In the early days of her marriage, Blanche spent her days caring for her children, and keeping her house spotless. The girls remember bath nights followed by hair curling torture at their mother’s hands, but the children were always very well dressed and very well behaved. As the children grew older, Bob’s job changed from working at Burns to working the pipeline in Alberta, and Blanche was left home to raise the children and get them through school. Blanche took on a short-term job working for the Alberta Cancer Clinic, and then she started traveling around the province with Bob on his pipeline jobs. Blanche saw a lot of Alberta during this time, but her dream was to travel abroad. This dream would never materialize as Bob passed away very shortly after retiring from the pipeline. Blanche did take one trip to the Hawaiian Islands in 2012 which she enjoyed very much and which she would have liked to repeat every year, but her health started deteriorating making this dream impossible.
At home, Blanche’s favorite pass-times were gardening and being in nature to watch the birds and other animals. Blanche and Bob cultivated quite the vegetable garden while living in Morningside, and once they made the move to Ponoka, Blanche continued her gardening with flowers in her yard.
The family would like to thank the staff at Rimoka Housing Foundation for making Blanche’s life comfortable for the last three years, as well as FCCS, and the nurses at Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre for the care they provided over the years.
As per Blanche’s wishes there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place and Blanches ashes will be laid to rest alongside her husband Bob’s in a plot chosen by them many years ago in Calgary. In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted to Rimoka Housing Foundation, or Ponoka FCSS.
