Chuck was born in Ross Township, Ontario on 26 June 1932 to the late Charles and Marion (née Peever) Ross. He was a co-conspirator with and younger brother to Alvin. He was also an obvious role model to younger sisters Evelyn, Anne and Wilma.
To say Chuck grew up in Cobden, Ontario may be a bit of an overstatement for he never lost his boyhood sense of adventure to the great benefit of all who knew him. He did however spend his formative years in Cobden receiving his early education there. Chuck’s favourite sports in those years were football, softball and hockey. Cobden High School also afforded him the opportunity to join the Army Cadets at which he excelled, attaining the rank of major. A highlight was the participation in a two-week camp out west where he made lifelong friends.
Chuck completed the Special Commercial course in Renfrew after Grade 12 and worked in the dairy with his father. Never one to be idle, he furthered his skills by passing the butter maker’s course in Guelph. Friends from his softball team and his church recognized his nurturing and generous nature and persuaded him to try teaching.
Education struck a chord with Chuck and he soon graduated Teachers College and embarked upon a career in teaching. To his great credit he subsequently improved his qualifications by completing a Bachelor of Arts degree. His vocation began in a one room rural school house in Springtown and ended at Confederation High School in the big city of Ottawa (Nepean). He taught all subjects but specialized in art history in his later years. During his tenure he shaped the minds of those in kindergarten and in all thirteen grades – no student was safe from his imagination and shenanigans. The accomplishments of former students gave Chuck great joy throughout his life.
Cupid’s arrow first pierced Chuck upon encountering Elizabeth (Betty) Zavitski when she was the tender age of 16 but it must have been merely a flesh wound. Another three years passed before Cupid truly hit his mark and Chuck and Betty subsequently married on 29 June 1966. Betty proved to be a great match for Chuck bringing him both grace and style while encouraging his adventurous spirit. Together they shared many adventures and a mutual love of ice cream.
Chuck pursued an uncommonly wide variety of activities and volunteered across numerous organizations. He was constantly on the move. His interests ranged from computer programming back in the early 70s (goto statements anyone?), Winterlude snow sculpting, hot air balloon crewing and chasing, photography, curling, playing chess and euchre, windsurfing, NCC Log Cabin sugar bush organizing and tour operating, lawn bowling, calling square dancing, cross-country and downhill skiing, stage crewing for Centrepointe Theater, sailing, National Art Gallery tour guiding, canoeing, local community outdoor ice rink flooding and shovelling, pool, various jobs at Valleyview Little Animal Farm and wood carving. He performed several committee functions at Red Pine Camp as well as many other hands-on activities, held various positions in his church, was past-president of City View Curling Club, Outaouais Wood Carvers and Nepean Lawn Bowling Club and founded Chuck’s Woodcarving Clutch (affectionately known as “the Wood Chucks”). The man just wasn’t happy if he wasn’t on the go!
Extended family benefited greatly from Chuck’s active and gregarious nature, his wide interests and capabilities and his generous commitment of time. Generations of nieces and nephews truly enjoyed his company and had their horizons expanded.
Chuck is survived by his beloved wife Betty (née Zavitski). He is also survived by his sister Wilma (late Doug) Nevin and brothers-in-law Harold (late Evelyn) Curry and Edward (Barbara) Zavitski. He is predeceased by his siblings Alvin (late Mercy) Ross and Anne (late Grant) Waite as well as his brother-in-law Keith Zavitski (late Donna) Zavitski. “Unc” will be greatly missed by his many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces and even great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces.
A visitation will be held at Zohr Family Funeral Home, 85 Munroe Avenue E, Renfrew at 11 am Saturday, January 11, 2025 followed by a memorial service at 12:30 pm in the Chapel.
Memorial donations to Renfrew Victoria Hospital and Trinity St. Andrew’s United Church in Renfrew would be appreciated by the family. Condolences, tributes and donations can be made at www.zohrfuneralhome.com
