Zoltan Hegedus Obituary
At the age of 12, Zoltan fled from Hungary with his family in the wake of the 1956 uprising. Eventually they made their way to the Hungarian community in Toronto. Zoltan attended St. Michael’s Elementary School downtown Toronto and then graduated to St. Michael’s Choir School where he did well in history religion and choral music. We met in 1970 on a bus taking the Kodaly Ensemble to Cleveland. This was a large Hungarian group that included a choir a folk dance troop and a small Orchestra. Zoltan sang in the choir. I danced. We fell in love over a game of Scrabble on the return trip. Zoltan had sparkling smiling friendly personality and loved good discussion on religion and many other topics. His parents owned a large property on Highway 7, just after the bend on the way to Acton. He hoped to run an Arts and music camp for Hungarian children. His brother Attila was gifted in sculpting.
In the meantime, he applied for work at the Ontario School for the Deaf in Milton and was hired as a house parent because of his experience with children. We married in 1972 and moved to Milton in 1974 when our daughter Kristina was just 6 months old. Our son Gabor was born in 1975. Zoltan and I have lived in Milton now for 50 years. He worked at the E.C.Drury residence for 28 years while I worked at Milton Library also for 28 years. Our daughter would later work with special needs children and our son would become a professional musician and singer.
Zoltan died in his sleep on May 7th 2024. He is deeply deeply missed by his wife Eva, his daughter Kristina (Lenny) their sons LJ and AJ, his son Gabor (Mylene) and their boys Raphael and Jakob. Also missed by his close friends Joe and Linda, his cousin’s family Gyongyi Hegedus and her children and grandchildren, my sister Mary and by my relatives including my cousins and my close friends and by all those who worked with him or sang with him or who were were in Scouts with him or whom he taught piano privately or who belong to his small adult choir at Holy Rosary Church. He also was very grateful for all those who provided care especially his daughter and our friend Kim and the people at Allendale.
He touched so many lives with his positive and sunny disposition. He was so very proud of his children and grandsons. He was looking forward to his 80th birthday coming up on May 30th and wanted everyone to come and have a good time and lots of cake! May you have a grand celebration in Heaven dearest Zoltan!
The Funeral Mass is at 11:00am on Fri. May 31, 2024 at the Holy Rosary Catholic Parish, 139 Martin St, Milton, ON
with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. A private family inurnment Committal Service is to take place in the future
at the Milton Evergreen Cemetery.
