Yvonne Russell
November 1, 1934 – August 25, 2024
In the words of her late husband, Art – «Mama – I’ve been waiting for you!»
Well, the wait is over, as Yvonne Russell (Scharlach) has made the journey to reunite with her forever love, and the Lord, in Heaven. After a long battle with Alzheimer’s, Yvonne took her final breaths in the early morning of Sunday, August 25th, 2024, with family at her bedside and an abundance of love in the room.
Yvonne was born to Walter and Anne Scharlach – one of 12 children fixtured in the Kitchener-Waterloo community. Yvonne was predeceased by her siblings Walter, Grace, Priscilla, Jeanette, Reginald, Doreen, Catherine, and James. Survived by Diane, Judy and Ronald.
She met her beloved Art when she was 17 years old. Both were entirely bemused with each other and married two years later on May, 15th, 1954. Over the years they welcomed their four children; Susanne (James) Logan, Gail (John) Matura, Lorie Russell, and Richard (Sandra) Russell – who absolutely adored her. She taught her children to love fiercely, to stand up for themselves, to be fearless, to work hard, and to bake one heck of a flaky pie crust!
She leaves behind seven grandchildren who worshipped her (and her Christmas cookies!!): Jenna (Craig), Deanna, Matthew (Kelly), Michael (Kylie), Emily (Brandon), Jamie (Carlee), Haley (Mike). Lovingly remembered by her six great grand-children: Logan, Avery, Jacob, Jordyn, Jaxon, Russell and William.
She took pride in being a homemaker and doting on her children in their youth. She later found a new joy in an outside career, working for Birks Fine Jewellery. However, she found her true passion when she began working, as a special need’s assistant, with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. She lovingly spoke of the special bond she forged with the children, and the teachers there – relationships that have lasted to present day.
Yvonne was an active and dedicated member of the Catholic Church, and her faith carried through her final moments. She was a valued Eucharistic Minister, served faithfully with the Waterloo Knights of Columbus and an active participant of the Red Hat Society. Yvonne made sure she prayed for every soul that crossed her path.
Yvonne loved a good prank, and a great joke – she took well to the stage, and was an incredible story-teller, she never met a microphone she didn’t like! She also enjoyed when Art went on his fishing trips – because that meant she got a new outfit! She was an incredible baker, and made the best Sunday roast dinner, where the family often gathered to share in the weeks’ events. She showed up for every occasion, dressed to the nines, she always brought a card to showcase her caring words which were always underlined. She loved her cottage in Waubaushene and built endless friendships up there. She was a card shark – and that’s putting it lightly! As long as you brought your loose change for betting. To say she was our «Queen of Hearts» is an understatement.
The family would like to thank the staff and support team of Lanark Heights, who so lovingly cared for Yvonne in her final years. For the outpouring of support and affection you showed her, and our family, we are deeply grateful.
Yvonne’s family will receive relatives and friends from 5:00 – 8:00 PM, on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467.
