Obituary
Yvonne McInnis
Georges River
It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of Yvonne Marie McInnis (Vickers) of George’s River. Yvonne passed away peacefully at the Northside General Hospital on the evening of Wednesday, June 21, 2023 with family by her bedside.
Yvonne was born January 13,1941 to the late Margaret (Tutty) and Richard Vickers of Sydney Mines and was predeceased by her beloved and cherished husband of 58 years, Duncan “Buddy” McInnis.
Yvonne was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother that always placed her family’s needs before her own. She was a wonderful homemaker and exceptional self-taught baker. Favorite baked goods included sally buns, homemade bread, maid of honors, tea biscuits, cinnamon rolls, blueberry pies, fudge and fat archie’s, which would eagerly be devoured by family and visitors. Baking was not only a passion, but something Yvonne found very therapeutic. Oftentimes one could find her setting bread late at night, making cookies or a pan of fudge. In 1978, Yvonne was hired as a baker at the Northside Community Guest Home and worked there for 14 years. During breaks she would regularly visit with residents and bring them freshly baked treats from the kitchen.
Yvonne loved visits and afternoons picking blueberries in her favorite patch “in the River” with sister-in-law Vonnie, hanging laundry on the line and then ironing everything once dried, quilting, step dancing to a good jig, spending quality time with family, visits with good friends Leona, Marge, Marg, Vonnie and Mae, and travelling to visit family living away. Yvonne was very close to her siblings. They celebrated birthdays and other special occasions together over the years with lots of singing, laughter and abundance of food.
Yvonne’s motto was about giving and sharing, which extended to friends, neighbors and those in need. She was active within her community as a founding member of the Ladies Auxilliary at the George’s River Community Hall, volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul in Bras d’Or and organized Pastoral Airs events at the St. Joseph Church in Bras d’Or.
Survived by children Francis (Janet) McInnis, Rusagonis, NB, Geraldine (Mike) Cantrill, Calgary, AB, John (Shelley) McInnis, Middle Sackville, NS, Joseph (Michelle) McInnis, Sydney Mines, Wayne McInnis, Killam, AB; her grandchildren, Wayne (Genna), Michelle (Marc), Leah (Cameron), Breton, Connor, Joseph, Reagan, Evan, Sarafina, Jema, Krystal (Bradley); her great-grandchildren, Hendrix, Isla, Dylan, Kash, Hudson, Vance, Andi Marie, Bradley, Alexa, Landen; her sister Geraldine McInnis, Sydney Mines; brothers Richard (Marg) Vickers, Sydney Mines, Fr. John Vickers C.S.C, Welland, ON,
Tom MacInnis, Georges River, Farrell (Frances) McInnis, London Ontario and many nieces and nephews that she cherished.
Besides her parents and her husband, Yvonne was also predeceased by sisters Margaret Long, Betty MacNeil, Isabelle O’Handley, Theresa MacLean, brother Alexander Vickers, in-laws Florence and Roderick McInnis, daughter in-law Leah McInnis and grandson Sean Cantrill, along with numerous sisters and brothers-in-law.
Our family would like to pass along sincere thanks to all staff for that were involved with our mother’s daily care at Parkland Assisted Living in Sydney, MacEachern Place and Teresa Terrace at the Northside Community Guest Home in North Sydney and while in palliative care in the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney.
There will be no visitation, a funeral mass will be held at 10:30 am, August 19, 2023, at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Following the burial all are invited to join the family for refreshments at the George’s River Community Hall, George’s River. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J.
