The family of Yves St. Jacques is deeply saddened to announce his passing on Sunday, December 8, 2024 at the age of 88. Born in Buckingham, Quebec, in 1936 to Conrad and Jacqueline St. Jacques, Yves was the third of five sons and four daughters in a loving and lively family.
In 1942, Yves moved to Timmins, Ontario, where he would dedicate his life to his family, community, and countless causes. His career as a firefighter began in 1960, marking the start of a 32-year legacy of service that culminated in his retirement as a captain from the Timmins Fire Department in 1992. Yves often expressed gratitude for this career, famously saying, “Thank the Lord and Chief Stanley,” a heartfelt acknowledgment of the fire chief who gave him the opportunity to serve.
Yves’s life was a testament to selflessness, community spirit, and leadership. In addition to his firefighting career, Yves took on numerous roles and initiatives to improve the lives of those around him:
• 1960: Founded the Muscular Dystrophy Fund, serving the cause for nine years.
• 1960s: Coached Timmins Legion Branch 88 hockey for eight years, inspiring young athletes.
• 1964–1965: Actively supported the Big Brothers Organization, mentoring local youth.
• 1970–1980: Founded the Toy Drive for James Bay Indigenous children through the Timmins Firefighters.
• 1974–1979: Served as Chairman of the Timmins Winter Carnival, fostering community celebration.
• 1971–1996: Founded the Miss Northern Ontario Pageant, showcasing the talent and beauty of Northern Ontario women to the nation.
Yves’s dedication to his community earned him numerous accolades, including:
• 1970: Named Timmins Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the Timmins Jaycees Association.
• 1970: Recognized as one of Ontario’s five Outstanding Young Men by the Ontario Jaycees.
• 1975: Received an appreciation award from the Timmins Winter Carnival Committee.
• 1976: Honored for faithful service to the Timmins community.
• 1979: Presented with an award by the Premier of Ontario, Allan Pope, for his service to the city.
In addition to his professional and community contributions, Yves was a hero on several occasions. He saved the life of a drowning man in Nice, France, while on vacation in 1990; he performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to save the son of Mayor Leo Del Villano in 1964; and he helped rescue a child from drowning in a local creek in 1988.
Yves was also an entrepreneur, owning St. Jacques T-Shirts and Sportswear in the 101 Mall and Timmins Square for 10 years. After retiring in 1992, Yves and his beloved wife, late Shirley (née Wallingford), enjoyed 16 cherished years as snowbirds in Florida, creating some of their happiest memories together.
Yves and Shirley were married on October 8, 1956, and shared 68 years of love and devotion. Together, they raised three daughters: late Cindy St. Jacques, Debbie Voyer, and Tammy Clavet. Yves was a proud husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was his pride and joy, and he leaves behind seven grandchildren: Shannon Santori (née Reid), Sean Reid, Lindsay Woodhouse (née Reid), Sasha Tietz (née Pagé), Jesse Thoman (née Voyer), Patrick Voyer, and Scott St. Jacques; as well as ten great-grandchildren.
Yves will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched through his work, generosity, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 2 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Cathedral. Cremation will follow. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 13, 2024 from 7-9 p.m. and on Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at LESSARD Funeral and Cremation Centre.
