Woodsworth passed away with his family by his side on April 1, 2024 at the Hospice at Glengarda in Saskatoon, SK at the age of 91 years.
Woodsworth leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory, his loving wife of 60 years Marie (nee Prenevost), his children: Darlene (Garth), Gail (Kevin), Nancy (Kevin), his grandchildren: Janelle, Selena; his sister Iona, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Woodsworth lived his life on the family farm near Fielding where he was born. He attended Beckwith, a one room schoolhouse, for the early years of his education, travelling by horse or walking the two-mile distance. A few years of schooling were completed by correspondence, and he graduated Grade Twelve from Fielding High School.
He had a lifelong love of nature. He enjoyed horseback riding and working with the cattle. His easy manner with the cows meant they knew his voice and would follow him just about anywhere. He enjoyed birds and birdwatching. He built many birdhouses and loved the annual return of the wrens and hummingbirds to the backyard. He passed on this love of birdwatching to his family. He also enjoyed woodworking and has left many handmade items for his family to cherish.
Along with the many tasks of farming, he also spent time maintaining the yard and helping Marie with their abundant garden. He enjoyed old time music and going dancing with Marie.
Family was the most important thing to Woodsworth. When his daughters were younger, many summers were spent travelling and camping with family at Provincial Parks. In later years a new tradition began when Woodsworth and Marie purchased a motorhome. Then their camping trips expanded to include their daughters’ spouses and granddaughters. The couple also took many road trips to visit relatives in the prairie provinces.
He volunteered his time to a number of organizations over the years. This included the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, the Radisson Co-op, and he was also a board member of Maymont Central School for 17 years.
In 2020, Baker Farms received the Century Family Farm Award. Woodsworth lived his lifelong passion of farming up until the age of 89 when he finally stepped down from driving the combine. Now, the farming legacy continues with Woodsworth and Marie’s nephew Kim and his sons.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Hospice at Glengarda for their compassionate care of our whole family during Woodsworth’s time there.
At Woodsworth’s request a private celebration of life will be held with immediate family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
