Obituary
It is with profound sorrow that the family of the late Woodrow James “Jim” Burton announces his passing. Jim slipped into the presence of the Lord from his family home in La Scie, NL on Saturday, December 21st, 2024 at the age of 87 years.
Jim was born in La Scie, NL on September 2nd, 1937, one of 16 children to Edwin and Gertrude (Ward) Burton.
Jim met Marion Chipp in La Scie and they were married on January 11th, 1961. Together, Jim and Marion raised their three children – Murray, Luann and Eddie in La Scie. Jim was overjoyed to welcome his first grandchild, Nicholas and later Chuck, Candice and Aaron.
Jim was a hardworking man who loved his family and made sure they were always provided for. Jim started his earliest employment as a fisherman with his brothers and then into the mining industry in Tilt Cove, from that he went to Rambler Mines until they shut down ending his working career, again, as a fisherman up until his retirement.
In July 2016, Jim’s life was forever altered at the tragic loss of his precious grandson, Chuck. Jim would often speak of Chuck – those words which were just an overflowing of the constant memories in his heart.
On Monday, December 16th, Jim surrendered his life to the Lord and today we rest in the hope that he is safely at home.
Jim leaves with a lifetime of wonderful memories, his wife of 63 years – Marion Burton, La Scie, NL; children – Murray Burton (Michelle), Baie Verte, NL, Luann Burton (Keith) and Eddie Burton (Linda), all of La Scie, NL; grandchildren – Nicholas Ellis, Candice Burton and Aaron Burton; great granddaughter – Zoe Ellis; siblings – Bond Burton, Betty Noseworthy, Doreen Morey, Kathleen Gillingham and Louise Gillingham (Ralph); brother-in-law – Willie Chipp and sister-in-law – Mildred Chipp, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Jim is predeceased by his precious grandson – Chuck Burton (2016); parents – Edwin & Gertrude Burton; parents-in-law – Chesley & Julia Chipp; siblings – Robert Burton (Mildred), Clarence Burton (Clara), Randolph Burton (Hazel), Lloyd Burton (Ruby), Ralph Burton (Idella), Ella Inder (Chesley), Marina Gray (Raymond), Rita Hamlyn (Gordon) and two infant siblings; siblings-in-law – Raymond Noseworthy, Ross Morey, Roy Gillingham and Shirley Burton.
Public Visitation will take place from The Salvation Army Citadel, La Scie, NL, on Monday, December 23, 2024, from 2pm – 4pm and 7pm – 9pm.
Envoy Sandra Pinksen will conduct the Funeral Service from The Salvation Army Citadel, La Scie, NL, on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at 1pm. Interment to follow at The Salvation Army Cemetery, La Scie, NL.
As an expression of sympathy, flowers are gratefully accepted or donations may be made in Jim’s memory to The Salvation Citadel, P.O. Box 54, La Scie, NL A0K 3M0.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 22 Main Street, Baie Verte, NL.
