Winnifred Jessie Marshall Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family shares the peaceful passing of Winnifred Jessie Marshall (née Abbott) on Saturday, January 13th, 2024 at the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre at the age of 90. Winnie was a dedicated teacher who taught in various communities in Newfoundland for 36 years. Her career started just after Newfoundland joined Confederation in a two-room schoolhouse and ended at St. Michael’s Elementary in Stephenville Crossing. She was active in the community as a member of the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital Auxiliary and the Masonic Lodge Ladies Auxiliary. She was also an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion and was active in the Girl Guides of Canada throughout her life as a leader and member of the Chickadees. Winnie loved to dance, and she spent many a Saturday night at the Legion dancing with her husband, Gordon. She enjoyed playing cards and having a “scuff” at the “Time” at the Stephenville Seniors 50+ Club in her later years. Winnie also enjoyed participating in skits, attending concerts, writing comical lyrics and poetry for special occasions, and sharing a laugh with family and friends.
She leaves to mourn with many loving memories: daughter Georgette (James Clarke) Marshall; grandson, Marshall Clarke; sister Linda (Allen) Rowe; brother-in-law Harold Wells; and dear friend Martha Lucas; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends. Winnie is predeceased by her husband Gordon Marshall; parents William and Alice Abbott; and sisters: Shirley Wells, Ivy Skiffington, Georgina Abbott, and Margaret Abbott.
Following her wishes, cremation has taken place. A visitation will take place on Friday, July 19th from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Russell’s Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 20th at 2:00 PM from St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Hillview Avenue. Interment to tfollow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy donations in Winnie’s memory may be made to St. Augustine’s Anglican Church in Stephenville, NL or St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Port au Bras, NL.
