Wilhelm (Willy) Edelbrock, was born on July 16, 1930, on a farm near, Ennigerloh, North Rhine-Westphalia (German: Nordrhein-Westfalen) Germany, and passed away at age 94 on October 9, 2024 at Headwaters Health Care Centre, Orangeville. Willy was the beloved husband of the late Margarete Edelbrock, (nee Meier) of 60 years marriage. He is survived by his two children, Elisabeth (Victoria, BC) and Ralph (Madonna House, Combermere, ON); and siblings, Alfons (Elfi), Hilde (+ Berni), and Hubert (+ Marina). His other siblings are predeceased, Gertrud (Theodor), Heinrich, Theodor, Klemens, Bernhard (Annemarie), Karl (Barbara), Maria (Josef), Paul (Marianne), Josef (Margret), Rudi and Mathilde (Georg). His parents, Theodor and Elisabeth (nee Schmitz) Edelbrock, are predeceased. Willy will be sadly missed by his numerous relatives and friends.
Born on a small farm, the 7th of 15 children, Willy made his apprenticeship in the Tönnishäuschen dairy and later furthered his studies in business in Dortmund after WWII. In 1953, he adventurously traveled to western Canada and stayed in Edmonton working at the Palm Dairy. Shortly, other brothers followed, one being Karl, a master carpenter. In 1955 they all moved first to Toronto doing construction sub-contract work and then to Orangeville. Soon afterwards Willy and Karl formed Edelbrock Bros Ltd in 1958, which included both a construction division and a lumber yard, Northway Lumber, later to become Mono Plaza. During the mid ’50s through into the ’70s numerous houses, cottages, offices, stores and factories, about 700 units, were built throughout Orangeville, Shelburne, Fergus, Aurora, Guelph, Owen Sound and Brampton to name a few locations.
With life on firmer foundations economically, Willy decided to return to Germany and married Margaret Meier, in Hamm, North Rhine-Westphalia, in April 1958. After returning to Orangeville, they had 2 children, Elisabeth and Ralph. Even though the business was all-consuming, Willy did set aside time for family.
In May 2013 for Willy’s and Karl’s contribution to the local community, they were presented with the President’s Award Dufferin – Caledon which is presented to business pioneers who are recognized as individuals, who through volunteerism and business have made a substantial contribution over an extended period of time to the economic and social sustainability of Dufferin County. Willy’s contribution included the W & M Edelbrock Center which opened in Autumn 2013.
Willy appreciated the support that enabled Edelbrock Bros to grow and to reciprocate he later supported a number of local establishments and programs including the W. & M. Edelbrock Fund & Bursaries through the Dufferin Community Foundation.
Those who wish, may donate on Willy’s behalf to the Dufferin Community Foundation, St Timothy Catholic Church, Orangeville or Madonna House, Combermere, Ontario.
