William Watt «Bill» ARKINSTALL Obituary
Dr. William Watt “Bill” Arkinstall died at home on June 29, 2024, in Kelowna, BC. Bill was born to Dr. Margaret and Dr. William Campbell Arkinstall, in Moreton-in-the-Marsh, England on April 10, 1937. He spent his early years in Hearst, Ontario where his parents worked in the mission hospital, and then grew up in Newmarket, Ontario. He studied agriculture at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and then transferred to medicine at the University of Toronto, which was a good choice because he fell in love with Karin, who was studying nursing. Just days after their wedding in October 1964, the newlyweds sailed to Belgium, where they studied French for five months, and then boarded a freighter to the Democratic Republic of Congo, the first of many adventures they shared over their nearly 60-year marriage. Bill’s first medical practice was with the Congo Protestant Relief Agency, with Karin as his nurse and surgical assistant, where they spent three years providing the full spectrum of medical care for impoverished Congolese communities with limited resources. When they returned to Canada, Bill completed his specialty in Respiratory Medicine and Allergy in Toronto and Montreal. Kelowna became their choice for their permanent home and practice in 1973. Bill lived life to the fullest. He loved his work. He cared deeply for his colleagues and patients. He was always ahead of his time – an innovator, teacher, and author, developing new medical devices and starting several businesses focused on health and wellness. He was also a very respected medical researcher, leading decades of research testing the efficacy of new respiratory treatments. Bill loved his family and travelled the world for work and fun, always bringing Karin, his mother, or his children along to enjoy the adventure. He was a pilot, a handyman, old time fiddler, and a farmer at heart, getting up at dawn to work on his farm and orchard. He loved parties, was always up for a conversation over a glass of wine, and skied the slopes at Big White until he was 80. His last years facing the inevitable decline of Parkinson’s Disease were difficult, but being able to stay in his home of 50 years was a comfort. The family expresses sincere gratitude to Paula, Dr. Ben Prozesky, the Parkinson’s Support group, and the Interior Health Community Care team for their compassionate care. Bill leaves behind his wife, Karin, his children William and Rhylin, his sisters Jean and Margaret, and his grandchildren Simon, Fintan, Lenaya and William Noah. A celebration of life will be held in the fall.
