The Salhany family announces the peaceful passing of William (Bill) Joseph Salhany.
For five and a half years, he fought a valiant battle which inspired many and when he could fight no longer, he left us quietly in his sleep during the early morning hours of October 9th, 2023.
Bill is predeceased by his father Edward and his mother Patricia. He is survived by his brothers Ted and his wife Maureen as well as his brother Jim. Surviving him is his wife and soulmate Karen and his mother-in-law Beryl. Left to mourn are his loving daughter Leigh and husband Tim and his adoring daughter Chrissy and husband Chris. Also surviving him are his beloved grandchildren Sydney, Ava, Linden and Mikayla. He is beloved and missed by his numerous nieces and nephews as well as their families. Left to cherish his memory are also too many friends to count.
Bill was born July 28th, 1951 in Montreal, Quebec Canada. His family headed to British Columbia in 1952, driving cross-country in their Blue Chevrolet. Upon arriving in the Vancouver area, Bill’s early childhood years were spent living in the Little Mountain area. In 1962, his father purchased a home in Coquitlam, where he graduated high school at Centennial Senior Secondary in 1969.
After graduation, Bill worked a number of odd jobs but eventually aspired to join the RCMP. He enjoyed a long 22 year career serving at the Vancouver International Airport Detachment, having retired in 1997.
In 1977, Bill met the love of his life, Karen. They married on December 30th, 1978. They enjoyed many years of marriage together – showing us all what it means to live your marriage vows to their fullest. Together they had two daughters – around which his world revolved. Having two “Daddies Little Girls” was the ultimate calling for him. The world has never known a better, more dedicated and loving father. Eventually when grandkids came along, Bill outdid himself and showed once again how family was everything to him. There was nothing too big or too small for “Papa.” If you needed him, he was there.
Always brave, Bill would eventually face his ultimate battle when he sustained a catastrophic injury during a routine heart surgery in 2018. He fought for his life many times over and in the end, he was rendered a quadriplegic. He had to spend many years in care but Bill never quit, showing us all what strength and courage looks like. He persevered…not for himself but for us – his family. Selfless to the end a hero.
After five and a half years fighting a valiant battle, he was finally reunited with Mom under one roof. He reached his goal. Early on Thanksgiving Monday morning he had fought all he could and with peace and love in his heart…he quietly slipped away.
How thankful are we all for the love of this amazing man. He will be forever missed by too many people to count but his legend lives on. “William The Conqueror” endures and I know we will meet him again.
