It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William James Bagshaw, fondly known as Bill, who peacefully left us on July 20, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 10, 1932, in Medicine Hat, AB, Bill was the youngest son of William and Pauline Bagshaw, and a cherished brother to Elsie, Frank, and Doug.
Bill’s life was nothing short of remarkable, filled with countless achievements and lasting contributions to the city of Edmonton. His indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to the community have left an indelible mark on the skyline and the hearts of countless individuals.
Throughout his illustrious journey, Bill held prestigious positions such as Vice-President of the Commonwealth Games, President of Klondike Days, and the Kinsman Club. His visionary leadership led to the establishment of the renowned “Spirit of Edmonton,” and he was instrumental in launching the campaign to bring the Convention Center into existence.
In addition to his achievements in the public sphere, Bill played a significant role in shaping the media and business community. He was the trailblazing first Publisher of the Edmonton Sun, shaping the newspaper’s success and impact on the community. His passion for media and communication also led him to serve as the Sales Manager at both CFRN TV and CHQT Radio, further leaving his mark on the broadcasting landscape.
Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to found and own Focal Customer Development, a venture exemplifying his keen business acumen and innovative approach to customer engagement.
Furthermore, over a span of 25+ years with TEC, he mentored numerous business leaders, leaving an enduring legacy in the corporate world.
Bill’s life was anchored in love and family. He was married to his beloved wife, Olli Bagshaw, for 57 years until her passing on May 4, 2023. Their love was a beacon of inspiration for all who knew them. Bill’s legacy lives on through his loving children, daughter Barbara Duncan (Bagshaw, Larson; husband Bernie Semenjuk), daughter Kara Sather (Bagshaw), son Bill Bagshaw Jr. (wife Jennifer), and stepson Dan DeMarco (wife Denise). His spirit will forever be cherished by his nine adored grandchildren: Keltie Duncan (partner Jamie Martyniuk), Bonnie Ganton (Duncan, husband Matt), Kelsey Sather, Leif Sather, Kennedy Sather, Will Bagshaw, Nyah Bagshaw, Mario DeMarco (wife Kelsey), and Rhys DeMarco, as well as his great-granddaughter, Harper Ganton.
Bill’s warmth and care enveloped his extended family too. He will be dearly missed by numerous nieces and nephews whose lives he touched with kindness and compassion, especially Jim Bagshaw (wife Karen), Bonnie Groves, Brian Kinsman (wife Kristie), Marlette Mack (husband Daryl), Scott Kinsman, and Craig Kinsman (wife Diana).
In celebrating Bill’s vibrant personality and his love for life, a joyful celebration of his remarkable journey will take place on July 31st, at 1:30 pm, at St. Thomas Moore Hall, 210 Haddow Close, Edmonton AB. To honor his memory, attendees are encouraged to come dressed in bright colors, reflecting Bill’s joyful spirit. Additionally, guests are invited to share funny stories about Bill, as laughter was always a cherished aspect of his life.
The world has lost a remarkable soul, but Bill’s legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. May his spirit soar high and forever find peace in the hearts of those he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the University of Alberta Hospital Foundation.
