Obituary
Our beloved William Irving (Bill) Mundle passed away on March 2, 2023 with his wife by his side, at Cumberland Regional Health Care Center, Amherst. He was born February 5, 1939 in Pugwash, to Irving and Edna (Snowdon) Mundle.
Following high school, Bill graduated from Mount Allison University with a degree in geology. Eventually he worked as Managing Director of Boart Longyear Company and in 1978 purchased Logan Brothers Diamond Drilling, which became Logan Drilling Group. He developed this into an international company with subsidiary companies in Georgia, USA and Medellin, Colombia. At the time of his passing he was CEO and Chairman of the Board, and very proud to still be involved with the company. Throughout his career Bill developed many life long friendships and had great appreciation for all of his employees.
For many years Bill was very much involved with the Mining Association of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Institute of Mining, from which he received a Fellowship Award.
Bill was a friend of Oak Island treasure hunter, Fred Nolan, and had a keen interest in the prospect of finding the treasure. For several years Logan Drilling provided a drill and drillers to endeavour to solve the mystery.
Following his return to Pugwash Bill became involved with. several community organizations. The Pugwash Yacht Club was one of his longest associations. Bill chaired the first meeting to form the Pugwash Yacht Club in 1983 and shortly thereafter became the first Pugwash Yacht Club commodore. One of his proudest moments was when his daughter, Deborah Cameron, became the current commodore. In honour of his support the marina is now known as the Bill Mundle Marina. He was a volunteer director of the Pugwash Co-op, a member of the HarbourFest committee, a volunteer for July 1st festivities and a member of the steering committee for the Pugwash Waterfront Master Plan..
Bill was an avid sailor and enjoyed many years sailing the waters of Nova Scotia with family and friends. As a member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Club Bill entered his yacht “Lecastal” in the 23rd biennial Marblehead to Halifax ocean race in 1989. Across the Gulf of Maine, sitting in fourth or fifth place, the yacht hit a dead whale, snapped the rudder in half and they had to abandon the race. It took a lot of organization to put together a campaign to enter Marblehead, so it was a tough decision and a big disappointment. Bill got the rudder replaced and the keel re-bedded and sailed the yacht for several more years.
Bill was a lover of laughing, dancing, travelling, sailing, gardening, building things in his workshop, apple pie and ice cream, and good conversations, particularly political!
Bill is survived by his loving wife Carolyn (Fogarty), his children, Deborah Cameron (Mike), Lesley Allen, Carla MacLellan (Danny), Steven (Lynn); Step daughter Patricia Shea (Rob Alexander); 7 grandchildren 11 great grandchildren, 3 nephews and 6 brothers in law and sisters in law and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, daughter Allyson, sister Mary Gatchell and brother-in-law Karl Gatchell.
The family thanks the staff at CRHCC for their kind care and light hearted banter, which Bill thoroughly enjoyed. We also want to thank Dr. Murray McCrossin for his many years of care to Bill and who’s friendship Bill and Carolyn enjoyed and appreciated.
Bill had the ability to meet challenges with a smile and to make people feel comfortable. He appreciated life and exemplified kindness. He was a true Renaissance man and will be tremendously missed. Bill lived a large life. May his next adventure be filled with the love that we had for him here.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the charity of your choice.
