William (Bill) Morgan Heinmiller (1942 – 2024)
Died peacefully with family by his side on Friday, January 12, 2024, in his 82nd year. Survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Vivian. Loving Dad to Catherine, Andrew (Caitlin), Peter (Kylie), and grandfather to Ava, Simone, Archer and Ingrid. Brother to Bruce, Brian, and Elizabeth, and Uncle to Becky and Mark.
Bill was born in Chesley, Ontario to Henry and Ada. He attended university in Waterloo and Toronto, eventually settling in Peterborough where he met his wife Vivian, a fellow teacher at PCVS, and they were married in 1968. His calm demeanor, patience, and sense of humour made him well-suited for his profession as a high-school math teacher, which he did for over 30 years, and he was well-liked by both students and colleagues. Bill’s diplomatic nature also served him well in his role as Chief negotiator for the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation.
Bill had a love of athletic pursuits and the out-of-doors. He coached soccer at Kenner, and coached his sons’ softball team. He was an avid skier, ski patrolling on the slopes and enjoying the trails at Kawartha Nordic. His blue fiberglass canoe saw a lot of use, from canoe races with his friends on the Otonabee river, to canoe trips in Algonquin Park. In the warmer months of the year, Bill could often be found cycling, swimming, or fishing.
Along with his love for the outdoors, Bill loved playing bridge and poker and also had a creative side, doing DIY projects for his home and cottage, woodworking, and furniture building. He especially enjoyed brewing his own beer and wine, and–though not generally known for his culinary skills- he would occasionally bake bread from scratch.
He lived with Parkinsons for close to 30 years with strength, resilience, and perseverance. He participated in extensive fundraising and advocacy activities, even throwing the ceremonial first pitch at a Blue Jays game for Parkinsons’ awareness. Despite the losses that PD brought, Bill kept moving, doing wheelchair yoga and playing catch and he continued to enjoy and appreciate even the smallest gestures and pleasures right up until the end of his life.
Bill will be remembered fondly for his love for his family, his commitment to community, his easy-going nature, his dry wit, and his enjoyment of life despite its challenges.
A celebration of life will be held at Ashburnham Funeral Home and Reception Centre, 840 Armour Road, Peterborough from 2-4pm (with remembrances beginning at 3pm) on Saturday January 27th, 2024.
