In Celebration of
William Ettridge
August 17, 1932 –
March 27, 2023
The Ettridge family must regretfully announce the passing of their patriarch William Henry Ettridge, the son of a working-class English family, on March 27, 2023, at Joseph Brant Hospital, at age 90, from what is listed as Pneumonia. Bill, as he was known by his friends came into this world on August 18, 1932, in Chelsea, England. Bill’s life was filled with adventures as a child in London. Survived World War II aged 7 thru 13, joined the Royal Air Force during the Korean War where he graduated in the top 10% to become a Jet Fighter Pilot and then a Fighter Training Officer. A little while later he met Sylvia Margret Shelton, the love of his life and what adventures they had! They started their life together ended up getting married and living in a caravan (house trailer) where they found out they were expecting their first child. 5 months along they emigrated to Canada, ending up in Hamilton, Ontario with $300 in their pocket. They had Mark, their first child on November 29, 1957 and celebrated his birth with a chocolate bar and a bottle of Coke. Susan his daughter came along in 1960, which who his published series Susan Super Sleuth, was crafted after.
Bill did a variety of jobs over the years while at the same time studying for his Chartered Accountant degree at night. During this time, he worked at Contractors Machinery, but his studies called for him to work in more than 1 job so his next was with Westinghouse Canada where he went from just an Accountant to eventually becoming Head of Accounting for Canada. Bill then grew tired of counting numbers and moved into the manufacturing side to become head of Steam Turbine Parts Renewal. He went on to grow Steam Turbine Parts and Renewal division increasing sales from a ¼ million a year to over 52 million a year in sales with 200+ employees. While operating this division Bill received one of the first IBM desktop computers and proceeded to teach himself how to do Computer Programming. Along the way he also taught himself how to read and write music, wrote books, and was published, designed and built a set for a play “The Lion in Winter “, built furniture for the house and fixed Sylvia and his family home up with his own hands. Bill took early retirement to work with his ex-son-in-law Luc Pellerin. Here, he and Luc formed a new company Pellet Tools & Drywall Supplies to supply Luc’s growing Drywall and Insulation business. After a few years, his son Mark joined him at Pell Insulation and within a year Bill and Mark assumed control of Pellet Tools and grew it into a supply house for the trades, selling some of the first battery powered hand tools made and specialty items not found elsewhere. The business continued to grow with his wife Sylvia joining them. Over the years, Pellet Tools transformed into ALLDOOR SUPPLY where he continued to work with Mark and at this time, Marks wife Rosanna, took over for Sylvia. The company success is a direct dedication to the guidance Bill provided over the many years he was involved. Bill never really retired as he always needed to be doing something to keep himself busy and entertained. Bill’s list of achievements over the years could fill dozens of pages!
Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over 68 years, Sylvia Margret Ettridge (nee Shelton) who was by his side until the end, his son and daughter-in-law Mark and Rosanna Ettridge, daughter, and son -in-law Susan and Peter Clark. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Christopher (Kyla) Pellerin, Katie (Matt Hutcheson) Pellerin, Bianca (Troy) McIlravey, Marcus (Samantha) Ettridge, Ciara (Zach Peckham) Ettridge and Alexander Brown. Bill’s great-grandchildren brought him much joy and they will miss him dearly; Anthony & Joseph Ettridge, Willow Peckham, Quinn Pellerin, Jackson Brown and Dylan and Paige McIlravey.
Bill will be remembered as a strong-willed gentleman, writer, inventor, and intellect of many facets.
There was nothing that he could not do and thrived on challenges.
Bill lived every day to its fullest and will be missed and never forgotten.
Cremation is taking place on Saturday April 1, April Fool’s Day, he would love that.
