William Birmingham Obituary
It is with profound sorrow that the family announces the sudden passing of William
(Bill) Birmingham at the age of 72, on Thursday, May 9th, 2024. Bill was born in
Chapleau, Ontario to Donald Birmingham (predeceased) and Yvonne Birmingham (nee
Madore) on September 17th, 1951. Yvonne will always treasure the memories made
with her precious son. Bill was also the beloved son-in-law of Ermes and Orvia
DiBiaggio (both predeceased). Bill leaves behind a true legacy of love and cherished
memories.
Bill will be forever remembered by his loving wife of 50 years, Carol Birmingham (nee
DiBiaggio). Bill and Carol met as young teenagers and spent a lifetime laughing and
making memories together. He will be forever missed by his best friend.
Bill was the definition of a family man. He was a cherished, real-life hero to his children
Benjamin Birmingham, wife Melissa and Lynn Massimiliano (nee Birmingham), partner
Clayton. His absence will be deeply felt by his loving grandchildren Ava, Mya, and
Bella Massimiliano, Kaeleb Edmonds, and Brett Birmingham; who were his pride and
joy and the center of his world. Bill was not just a father and grandfather, he embodied
love, strength, and wisdom and his loss leaves an irreplaceable void in the family.
Bill will also be fondly remembered by his adoring sister Patricia Longpre (Robert
predeceased) and his treasured in-laws, Alice and Brian Cormier, whom he regarded as
dear family. Bill was predeceased by his younger sister Wendy Caron (Pierre). He will
be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews, Robert Cormier, partner Tabitha,
Jennifer Cormier, Lyndsi and Lauren Longpre and Rebecca and Joshua Caron, wife
Cindy.
Bill grew up in Sudbury and attended Sheridan Technical School. He was an
accomplished athlete and excelled in all sports he played. Bill naturally fell into the
coaching role and spent 25 years coaching minor hockey, most notably for the Sudbury
Lakers. He was a highly decorated and respected coach who led his players to win
many championships. As a result of his accomplishments, Bill was awarded a coaching
Certificate of Accomplishment and the 3M Coaching and Recognition Award. A great
coach can change lives; Bill’s guidance and mentorship through hockey extended far
past the rink, helping to shape the character of many players, which left a lasting
impression that stayed with them forever. Bill changed many lives throughout his years
as a hockey coach.
While Bill is most remembered for his love of hockey, he also had a deep passion for
baseball. He played for 35 years with a remarkable group of friends. Bill found great
happiness playing ball and continued to play well into his 60s. The memories he made
throughout those years were some of his most cherished and he spoke of them often.
One of Bill’s greatest joys was being a grandfather. ‘Grandpa Bill’ always enjoyed the
ongoing challenge of teaching Kaeleb the secrets of fishing Dalton Lake. Despite many
hours on the water, countless laughs, and Bill’s best efforts, Kaeleb has yet to reach
the status of master angler. However, the time spent together at camp was cherished
deeply by both. Bill took great pride in his granddaughters and found immense
enjoyment watching them play the countless sports they participated in. He happily
followed ‘the girls’ from the field to the rink to the court, and would share with
everyone how proud he was of them. He was their biggest cheerleader and rarely
missed a game. The car ride home always involved ‘Papa’ critiquing game performance
and expressing his pride in their skills. With his youngest grandchild, the tables were
turned quickly when 5-year old Brett became the teacher and Papa the student. With
enormous pride for his highly intelligent grandson, Papa graciously accepted this role.
Bill was first employed as a Prison Guard at Kingston Penitentiary before pursuing his
34 year career with Bell Canada. He was a highly skilled technician who worked in a
variety of technical positions. As avid travelers, Bill and Carol enjoyed many vacations
with family and friends. Above all, Bill loved traveling to his beloved camp in Dalton,
Ontario; his home away from home. He was a great outdoorsman and found peace and
satisfaction being on the lake.
Billy Birmingham was simply the best. Those who had the privilege of knowing him
will miss his kindheartedness, his gentle soul, his generous hands and above all else,
his unmatched sense of humour. Bill’s quick wit and humour were unparalleled, always
able to lift spirits and bring laughter even in the toughest times.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to PetSave Sudbury in Bill’s memory. Bill
had a special love for his fur-babies who already miss his cuddles on the couch.
In honour of Billy and to keep with his legendary parties of the past, the Birmingham
Basement will be reopened for his Celebration of Life. Date to be announced.
