William «Billy» Murphy
February 8, 1934 – February 28, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of William Francis Murphy, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend. Born and raised in Kilbride, he left an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew him.
Preceded in death by his mother Annie Brennan, father Jim Murphy, siblings Catherine, Mary, Bride, Andy, Jim, and Pete, as well as his cherished wife Barbara and children Pamela, Brian, Donna, and Fred.
He is survived by his devoted son Allan, and his special friend Edith Halleran and his fur baby Toby. Bill also leaves behind a legacy through his nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
Bill’s professional journey led him from Labatt Brewery (then Bavarian Brewery) to dedicated service with the Metro Board and the City of St. John’s until his retirement. A true gentleman, he was known as a hard worker who selflessly assisted anyone in need. Bill’s life was a testament to his commitment to family and the friendships that became family bonds. Despite being hard of hearing, he communicated volumes through his actions and stood tall as a gentle giant.
Fondly known as Poppy Murphy, his presence at Quidi Vidi Lake was synonymous with rowing and the Royal St. John’s Regatta since the 1950s. As a rower, his impressive height and weight contributed to numerous crews, including the 1967 men’s championship crew Warren Texaco. Even in his later years, he continued to be an invaluable hand around the boathouse, steering crews to victory as the largest coxswain on the pond. In the 90s, his fellow rowers recognized his dedication by voting him Oarsman of the Year. In 2003, he achieved the honor of being inducted into the Regatta Hall of Fame, a distinction that brought him immense pride.
Bill Murphy’s life was a testament to strength, resilience, and the enduring power of family and friendship. He may have been a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A special thank you extends to those who cared for him in his final years, notably the members of Billy’s Committee. A heartfelt acknowledgment goes to his niece and substitute daughter, Christine Rowe (Fuzzy), whose unwavering dedication and love were a source of immense comfort to Bill. Her compassion and commitment during his final years were a true testament to the strength of family bonds and the depth of love that surrounds us in times of need. The family is profoundly grateful for the support and care provided by all those who touched Bill’s life in his journey towards peace.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation to take place at Caul’s Funeral Home on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 10 a.m. Celebration of life to be held at Caul’s Chapel on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 1 p.m., with inurnment to follow at Kilbride Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association.
