It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Bill, loving husband and father, at the age of 82. On Thursday, December 26, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at the Health Sciences Centre.
Bill was born in Valleyfield, NL on September 14, 1942. He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Emma, mother and father-in-law Edward and Elizabeth Barbour, brother Winston, sister Ella, brother-in-law Philip, Sister-in-law Bobbie.
Bill had a lifelong love for music. He was assistant organist at the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist at the young age of 19 under the direction of Dr. Donald Cook who recognized his musical abilities.
He was Director of The Singing Legionnaires for 40 years (uniting men in song and fellowship) and Director of The Silver Chord Singers (a group for seniors founded by Memorial University) for 8 years. He was organist and choir director at many St. John’s churches and played for numerous funerals and weddings, including funerals at the Carnell Memorial Chapel.
Bill was humble and contrite. Music, heritage, and love for his family were what meant the most to him.
Bill met and married Louise in 1969 and recently celebrated 55 years of marriage. He raised two children, Lisa and Jonathan. In his younger years, he spent many hours taking them and his nieces and nephews on outings to parks, and sledding etc. During summer vacations in Newtown he enjoyed sharing the Barbour heritage with many who would stop by or come knocking at the door.
He was also very artistic and enjoyed painting and drawing. Every year he would draw a picture for the family Christmas card.
Bill was also a modest man and had a great sense of humour, who had a joke for every occasion, including Dad jokes. He had a soft heart for animals and loved his many family cats. He loved posting on social media and enjoyed it to keep in touch with many friends and family both near and far.
Bill trained in accounting and worked at many local offices before joining to operate a business with his longtime partner Randell Porter.
Bill is mourned by his wife Louise, daughter Lisa, son-in-law Donald Buell, son Jonathan and daughter-in-law Nancy, grandchildren Rebecca, Jack, great grandson Thomas, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours.
Cremation has taken place.
Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, December 29th.
Funeral service will take place on Monday, December 30th, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel. With a reception to follow.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the SPCA.
“Music lingers on in the soul long after the last refrain.” Louise
