WILLIAM JOHN PERTSON. June 17, 1939 – February 17, 2024. It is with profound sadness and the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of William John Pertson after a long and courageous journey with Parkinson’s Disease. Bill was predeceased by his wife Sharron; first wife Valerie; his mother Lena; his father William; his brother Fred; his sister Elizabeth; his sister-in-law Diane; his brothers-in-law Taras and Earl; and his nephews Paul Jr. and Dean. He is survived by his son Jason (Faye); daughter Lisa (Henry); sister Sandra; sister Gloria; brother Paul; sister-in-law Maryanne; along with many nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bill was born and raised in Winnipeg Beach, MB. Bill’s dream was to become a member of the RCMP. Getting accepted into the RCMP was no small feat for Bill – in fact, you could say it was literally a stretch. As a teen, Bill was intrigued by the notion of becoming a Mountie. His interest piqued when he became a civilian member in the Fingerprint Identification Section of the RCMP in Ottawa in 1962. He would also serve in the Security Section, checking out the backgrounds of those applying to the RCMP. After a couple of years, Bill applied to become a Regular Member, wanting to serve his Country. Like all who attended RCMP training at Depot, all of his troop found training to be demanding and tough. Upon graduation, Bill was posted to Cranbrook, BC and would serve at a variety of detachments in BC, SK and MB until his retirement in 1999 after a career of service spanning 37.5 years. Early in his career Bill sought out the career path of Forensics and would complete his training to become a part of Forensic Identification Services wherein he would serve the majority of his career. This included being a part of some of The Highway of Tears murder investigations in Northern BC. An in-depth recounting of Dad’s career and experiences in the RCMP is detailed in the book his Troop wrote, called Faces Of The Force. It was a career that brought him a great sense of accomplishment and pride. The connection he maintained amongst his Troop mates up to the time of his passing was cherished by Bill and his family. Their support, love and prayers were a comfort to Bill and his family during Bill’s end of life journey.
Upon retirement in 1999 in Dauphin, MB Bill took on part-time employment at the Dauphin Co-op where he quickly became a favourite of both staff and customers alike. An avid golfer, Bill also was a long-time member at Gilbert Plains Country Club, including terms spent on the Board with a term as President. During his time on the board Bill saw the completion and opening of the Gilbert Plains Country Club’s Back Nine portion of the golf course. Bill also volunteered with the Dauphin Ag Society, Countryfest, Relay for Life and many others organizations over his life. His earlier years saw him compete locally as a curler in the many communities he served.
We would like to thank all of his caregivers over his journey, with a special heartfelt thanks to the staff of Grandview Personal Care Home.
A Celebration of Bill’s life was held at The Gilbert Plains Country Club on June 16th, 2024 from 11-2 pm with interment to follow at RCMP Depot Cemetery in Regina, SK on June 17th, 2024 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers we would ask that a donation be made in his memory to the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life.
