William «Bill» Douglas Hamilton Obituary
William (Bill) Hamilton of Milton, died peacefully at home July 20, 2024, from pancreatic cancer.
He was born on December 26, 1934 in Kingston, Ontario.
He attended what is now Clarkson University in upstate New York, graduating as an Electrical Engineer.
He is survived by his wife Sylvia of 45 years and two daughters, Lisa (Gary) Mulcock and Jodi (Steven) Land
and two stepdaughters, Joelle Johnson and Sally Blyle, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He began his working career in 1958 with Edo Canada and became their Senior Project Engineer. When the Canadian office was closed in 1970, Bill accepted a transfer to their Salt Lake City branch where he soon became Manager of Engineering. In 1978 he returned to Canada joining C-Tech in Cornwall as their Engineering Manager. The path to ITI began in 1981 when Bill was recruited by Fathom Oceanology to become a key member of their technical team. By the late 80’s he had become the primary customer contact for training and field service, while continuing to offer internal design support to the project engineers and drawing office. When ITI acquired Fathom in November of 1989, Bill was a key asset because of his in depth technical knowledge of their product lines. For 10 years his expertise in both electrical and mechanical systems made him a versatile engineering resource on such projects as the 2087 prototype, the new saddle for the Singapore VOS, Indian VOS, E-RAST, and RAST Mk. VI.
Bill retired at the end of 2000 and continued to encourage his wife to fulfill her dreams of breeding and showing dogs. After purchasing their first show dog in 1981 he too fell in love with the sport. Establishing the kennel name, Holweit, Bill and Sylvia together became passionate advocates and renown breeders/exhibitors of Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers, a breed originally from Ireland. They were outstandingly successful titling more than 130 Canadian champions and more than 30 American champions including several Best in Show winners.
Bill enjoyed the many friendships he made in the show world and shared his knowledge freely mentoring many new to the sport. He was elected to the leadership role President of the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier Association of Canada Inc. from 2002 through 2007. He was also the President of Credit Valley Kennel & Obedience Club, President of the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier Fanciers’ Assoc. of Ontario and Treasurer of Terrier Breeders Association of Canada Inc.
