William French Obituary
Passed away at the age of 75 years at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville on December 14th, 2023 with family by his side William Basil French.
Leaving to mourn: his four sons: Brian (Michelle), Wayne, Kevin and Kirk (Charmaine); his grandchildren: Dustin, Jared, Jordan, Wayne, Cassidy, Jayden, Kyndra, Kyra, Arianna “Pop’s Princess/Peanut”, Lydia “Pumpkin” and Sophia “DooDoo”; 5 great grand-children; his sisters: Christine, Diane and Jane; his brothers: Charlie, Hughie, Billy, Darryl, and Cartie; step-sister Vivian; and his Aunt Palma; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family, and friends.
Predeceased by: his parents, Mary (French) McLean and William Ingram; and step brother Arden.
Basil was a man who loved his grand-children, their presence throughout his life always brought him great joy and forever a smile to his face. Although he struggled with his health for a number of years, he maintained a positive attitude and a great sense of humour. He was known for his blunt nature as you never knew what he would say or do! In recent years, he was known to joke about the «Golden Years» and how he didn’t know where they were at?!! Basil was a good Father and a better Poppy and his regret was not spending more time with his children when they were growing up.
In his earlier years, one of Basil’s occupations was a school and chartered Bus Driver. He was very fond of his employer, Art Messervey and his wife, Laura and spoke several times over the years about his adventures in bus driving for them and how he missed those days and Art as he was a good friend of his. Before his health struggles Basil also enjoyed the outdoors, riding ATV and going in the woods with his sons or other family members and friends. In fact, how Basil lost his eye and ended up with a glass one was from a phantom tree branch while riding in the woods one day.
Following his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville on Tuesday, December 19th from 7-9 pm. A service and interment to take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Cystic Fibrosis Canada would be appreciated as he supported this charity faithfully every year.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital as well as to Dr. Qureshi and Dr. Dwyer. The nursing staff were particularly good at keeping Basil’s spirits up by joking around with him, even in the most dismal of circumstances.
