William Clark Obituary
William (Bill) Clark passed away unexpectedly on November 28, 2023.
Predeceased by his wife Agnes and survived by his daughters, Julie and Tania, and their partners Terry and Des. He will also be missed by his sister-in-law Catherine and husband Alfie, his nephews and their partners Iain and Jane, Gordon and Ruth, Andrew and Dawn. We hope that his countless friends remember him with happiness and a smile.
Born in Glasgow Scotland in 1938, Bill grew up in the Kelvinside area of Glasgow. Because of the war, he was sent with his older sister Isobel to the small town of Dunblaine at the age of 4 to live with Sam and Meg, a couple who he would keep in touch with for the rest of their lives. As a teenager, Bill became a ballroom dancer, joining the James Graham formation team – to meet girls he said! This would be the beginning of two lifelong loves – one of dancing and the other of the girl he met there, his wife Agnes. Bill joined the Army and spent most of it in Germany as part of the force working at Checkpoint Charlie. He was a member of the Royal Horse Guards and demobbed in 1962.
He married Agnes Heron in 1963 and had their first daughter Julie in 1966. Bill was curious and ambitious and convinced Agnes to gather up their daughter and 2 suitcases to move to Canada in 1967. They quickly became a part of their new community and welcomed their second daughter, Tania in 1970. He and Agnes missed dancing so much as he would do later in life with the Astronomy Club, Bill went in search of others who shared his love of ballroom dancing, and founded a unified organization of dancers across Canada called CABDA (Canadian Amateur Ballroom Dancing Association). He led that organization and competed with Agnes as a dancer until 1979 when he moved the family to New Jersey for a professional opportunity.
Bill traveled frequently and became well known in the Dairy industry in which he worked in tech sales, receiving industry accolades at annual conferences. He and Agnes began to plan for their retirement, and Bill chose a place called Porpoise Bay as their destination based on a map and the fact that he liked the name of the place! He retired in 2000 and began a new adventure in Sechelt with Agnes. They built their dream house overlooking Sechelt Inlet and gazed at the stars in the incredibly dark sky. This was the beginning of his next passion as he led the founding of the Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club. He also became a neighbourhood favourite; he would stand at the top of the driveway ostensibly to water the plants, but really just waiting to chat up any neighbours who would walk by. He and Agnes threw great parties where there was more than one incident of accidental or intentional sledding down neighbourhood driveways!
Most recently, Bill established himself in a new neighbourhood and often sat on his front porch, hailing the neighbours and making new friends. He came to adore his group of home support workers, Shak, Kobe, Cecilia and Lucille.
An informal service will be held at Devlin Funeral Home in Gibsons at 3pm Tuesday December 5.
