Willard Malcom Martin Obituary
On the evening of Friday, April 19, 2024, Willard Malcom Martin passed away suddenly doing what he loved most working on a car with his son, Chad.
Willard was born in Montague, Prince Edward Island on August 17, 1947, to his loving parents, the late Angus and Alice Martin. Willard leaves behind his loving wife Linda and his three children, the late Chad (Natasha) Martin, Steve (Amy) Martin, and Suzanne (Jason) Risi; and five grandchildren, Miah, Jake, Edie, Emersyn and Mckinleigh.
Willard grew up as the oldest brother of eight siblings. He admired his loving sisters Mary Martin and Clara (Elmer) VanderAa and his brothers Howard (Lorraine) Martin, Donnie Martin, Alison (Peggy) Martin, and Doug (Holly) Martin.
Predeceased by his brother Albert (Hilda) Martin of Valleyfield, PEI and his in laws Golden and Ada Dollar.
The loss of this lovely soul was deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing Willard. He was a dedicated husband, loving father, grandfather, big brother and friend to all.
Willard was known for his sense of humor, his work ethic, always finding the good in everyone and the love for his family. No matter if you were a family member, a neighbor, a friend, Willard embraced everyone he crossed paths with over his 76 years in this world. Willard always had a listening ear and a solution to any problem that came his way, just like the saying goes “when there is a Willard, there is a way.”
Willard’s strong work ethic began when he ventured west to Calgary, Alberta in 1968 where he eventually met the love of his life Linda, and they started growing their beautiful family. Willard obtained his heavy-duty mechanic diploma from Toronto, Ontario alongside his brother Albert Martin after leaving high school. He put his strong hands to work and was employed with B-Line transport as a heavy-duty mechanic where he gained years of experience.
In 1977, he decided to switch lanes with his career and began working in the oil and gas industry with Pamco. He operated a service truck until 1981 when he moved his family to Medicine Hat, Alberta to become the branch Manager for Pamco. In 1990, Willard and his family moved back to Calgary to fulfill his obligations as the Vice President for Service with Enerflex Industries.
Willard will be remembered for his love of camping in the summertime and water skiing behind his boat with friends and family. He will be remembered for his passion of guitar playing with his fellow musicians around the campfire at Glen Echo Resort, playing with his buddies at home and the countless hours of playing” Pretty Women” as a young boy at home. Willard spent many hours paddle boarding on Shuswap Lake alongside his beautiful daughter Suzanne telling jokes back and forth. You could also find Willard driving around in the golf cart with his grandchildren looking for golf balls on the family acreage. In the winter months, Willard could be found teaching and mentoring his family and friends on the slopes. The winter months were filled with downhill skiing and lots of laughter.
Willard will be remembered most when he put on his coveralls and tinkered away on many projects in the garage at home in Dewinton, Alberta. Like father, like son, you could always find Willard and Chad sharing their love for cars and never being able to sit still for too long.
Willard’s proudest moments are of his three beautiful children. His ongoing mentorship greatly impacted their work ethics, and he was so incredibly proud to see his son Steve follow in his footsteps and have the same career as him.
After retiring at 65 years old, Willard travelled with his beloved wife Linda to Yuma, Arizona and Shuswap Lake, British Columbia, and parts of Mexico. You could find Willard on Sunday mornings with his brother Al enjoying a cup of coffee together.
Willard will be remembered as an amazing role model, husband, father, and best friend from whom you would never stop learning from. He always had your back, through thick and thin and a wrench in his pocket to fix the finest things.
A celebration of Willard’s life will be held at the DeWinton Community Hall -114 Macloed Trail E, DeWinton, AB on Sunday May 26, 2024 from 2:00-5:00pm.
