Balhuizen, Wiepkje “Wilma” (née Slump) – Wilma passed away peacefully at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, to be with her eternal Father on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, in her 86th year, surrounded by her loving husband, Pieter of 59 years and their daughters.
Born December 20, 1938, Wilma was pre-deceased by her parents, Roelof and Aukje Slump, and sister, Wiepkje. She is survived by her siblings, Bernie Slump (Mary), Sandra Koning (Richard), and Gerda Lycklama (Heinz). She is survived by her children; Natalka Verra (Paul), Juanita, Christina Corcoran (Brad), and Carla Hosmar (Phil), her grandchildren; Brandon (Alyssa), Noah (Megan), Danielle (Andrew), Aaryn (Makenna), Taylor, Hope (Levon), Olivia, Paige, Rebecca (Brady), Chad (Carissa), Brooke and great-grandchildren; Sawyer and Jackson.
Wilma was born on a cold winter day in Hylaard, Friesland in the Netherlands. She and her 3 siblings lived in various towns in Friesland, including Langweer before immigrating to Canada in the summer of 1952 on the Groote Beer. The Slump family started their life in Canada in Palmerston, Ontario where Wilma went to school in a 1 room schoolhouse with 1 teacher and ten students, of which 6 were Dutch. She finished school, and the family moved to Millgrove, and then finally Burlington. By this time Wilma had learned to play the trumpet, the accordion, and could sing so beautifully.
When she moved to Clarkson on her own, she met her future husband, Pieter Balhuizen, at church. They wed on September 25, 1965, in Hamilton and started their life together in Toronto. By the time their first daughter, Natalka arrived, they were living in Faulkland. They had Juanita while there as well and then moved to the farm in Oakwood shortly after. The twins, Christina and Carla were born soon after taking on the farm. They had 4 girls within 3 and a half years and were living on a farm with limited water and cloth diapers…she was a dedicated and hard-working mother.
Wilma helped to provide and entertain her girls in a variety of ways with large gardens that needed tending, crafts, Calvinettes, 4-H, and more. Always with a lesson and a heart for Jesus. A Christian education was very important to Wilma and Pieter, Heritage Christian School became a big part of their lives. Once the girls were older, Wilma decided to go back to school and became a P.S.W. She won many awards and was the top of her class, which only proved how perfect that career choice was for her. She blessed many people over the years in nursing homes and private clients with her caring and loving manner.
Wilma was known for her singing ability and was part of a number of choirs and sang at many events. She would always say that she sang for the Lord. She loved to travel and was able to go on a few trips by bus, as well as back to the Netherlands with Natalka and Juanita, and to Israel with her church in the last few years. Wilma always smiled and hoped for the best in everyone. The last couple of years were tough with her health, but she kept going and would always smile through the challenges. Pieter was a loving and devoted husband who took great care of her through all of it. Their love for each other was beautiful.
Wilma served the Lord in all she did. She was a loving child of God, and she is now happily in His loving arms.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 11:00am at Jennings Creek Christian Reformed Church. Light refreshments following the service. A private family interment will follow at Friends Cemetery in Cambray, which is a mile east of the farm they have called home for the last 52 years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Heritage Christian School in Lindsay.
