Obituary of Wendell Watters
Wendell Alexander Watters, husband and soul mate to Betsy and very supportive father to Daniel and James in their adventures of life, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Pictou, on February 18, 1960, he was a son of Robert “Bobby” and the late Joyce (MacKenzie) Watters.
Wendell will be dearly missed by his family, friends, his loving wife Betsy and sons Daniel and James. Wendell is survived by his father, Bobby Watters (Barb); sister Lynn (Paul) , Ques. NB; brothers, Wayne, New Glasgow, Dale (Donna), Trenton, Steven (Marcene), Alberta; nephews Kevin, Dennis (Bridget), Kyle (Carly), and Colin; niece Brittany; two grandnieces, Brielle and Kyleigh; mother-in-law Jean Swansburg; brother-in-law John Swansburg (Barb), New Glasgow; with many additional cousins.
Wendell grew up in Scotsburn and went to the Roger Hill one room school house. After that he attended West Pictou School, played basketball and kept in touch with some of his friends from school. He worked one summer caring for horses, only to find out he was allergic to horses. He worked at a saw mill for a while in his younger days with his uncle Willard MacDonald. After gaining some experience in carpentry, he worked with his father many times. Wendell lived in Alberta receiving his education from S.A.I.T. University in carpentry. With his best friend and cousin Bill MacDonald, Wendell traveled to Kugluktuk (Nunavut), working with friends and family in the far North on and off for many years. He shared many stories of experiences in the North and of all the wonderful people he had met during his stay.
Wendell loved his time in Australia, but always said that he would return back home to N.S. When he did, that’s when Betsy came into his life. Wendell built a wonderful home for his wife Betsy and two sons Daniel and James. He had many family barbeques that everyone enjoyed on the Durham Hill, from Christmas meals to birthday parties and sometimes just a get together.
Wendell could do just about anything. He comes from a very talented and skillful family. As a father Wendell went above and beyond, he was always involved in his boy’s lives, from the moment he became a father; from coaching Daniel’s basketball team; to the time he spent working with James. Like Daniel said “no matter what it was, Dad was very enthusiastic about it.” He was always loving to everyone he knew and to everyone he had met during his travels through life.
We would like to say “Thank You” to so many wonderful people involved with Wendell’s care, all the doctors and nurses in Halifax and New Glasgow, Dr. Tom Parks, the Palliative Care Team, Rachel MacDonald (who Wendell called his angel), Dr. Anne Kwasnik, and the V.O.N. for their wonderful care. A special “Thank You” to Bill and Nova MacDonald for all their wonderful visits and support to Betsy and Wendell and to Cindy Roy (cousin to Betsy and long time friend to Wendell).
His funeral service will be held 2 o’clock Tuesday, April 18th at Eagles Funeral Chapel, Westville with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. A gathering for family and friends will also take place on Tuesday from 3-5 p.m. at Scotsburn Fire Hall.
