November 15, 1937 – January 19, 2024
On a heavy snowfall day, Wendel decided to take his last ski-lift up to the sky. After five years of disabling physical challenges, it was time to be at peace. His wife Irma, son Michael (Liz), daughter Lisa (Eugene), grandchildren Shaydon and Kara, extended family and living friends, will miss his hard-working ethic, enthusiasm for life, smile and most of all having fun with those he cared about. He was the eldest of six children and now leaves behind three of his four sisters and brother in Germany.
Wendel was born in Ferninand, Romania in 1937. His family moved to Poland (1940), Austria (1944) and finally settling in Germany (1953). At the age of 14, he started his first apprenticeship as a shoe maker (which explained his quarterly chore of polishing our shoes), and later changing to a three-year apprenticeship in sausage maker/meat cutter because of economic times.
Skiing is what brought Wendel to Vancouver, Canada in 1957. This is where he met many longtime friends in soccer, in the community and his wife of 63 years Irma. In 1964 while working for Grimms Sausage, he was offered a job in the meat department at Woodwards-Kamloops; and retired at Safeway. He and Irma built a house in Westsyde in 1967, and he took so much pride in his creativity in the recycled wood and rock work he did throughout their home and yard. Over the years he loved to help family and friends with their homes and property projects. Especially turning old into new.
Wendel’s passion for skiing lead him into being a member of the Tod Mountain Ski Club, teaching and the first coach of the Nancy Greene Ski Team. He and Irma spent countless hours with organizing and raising money for the Ski Team. In retirement, Wendel became a Sun Guide (15 years) and part of the Sun Peaks Antiques. His love for singing (including yodeling on the chairlift) and enthusiasm for showing tourists the beauty of our land, was part of a perfect day.
Wendelin Ternes was the toughest man we knew and was called the Six Million Dollar Man (Bionic). His handful of surgeries (club member at RIH), never stopped Wendel from producing and doing all the things he loved. In his celebration, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation or the Pine Grove Residence Society. We want to thank the amazing staff at Pine Grove Care Centre and the many years of attentive care from Dr. James Howie.
“May you bloom and grow”
