We are sad to announce the passing of , age 93, on February 6, 2024.
Ronald was born on November 22, 1930 in Shawville, QC to The Rev. W.E.Ross and Anna Pearl Makin. Due to his father’s ministry, the family moved several times. Ronald had fond memories of his time in Orangeville and Trenton with friends at cadets, football and playing saxophone in the high school band. After high school, Ronald had several jobs as a young man, working as a funeral director’s assistant, a police cadet and a bank teller. Before he had established a career, he met Dorothy Davidson, a nursing student at Oshawa General Hospital on which turned out to be, a successful blind date. Dorothy’s engagement ring was later purchased with the money they had accumulated from saving a silver dollar on each date. Ronald lovingly recalled this story often while holding Dorothy’s hand. They married in 1955 and together, Ron and ‘Dort’ raised their children Peter (Susan), Edward ‘Ted’ (predeceased), and Nancey (Luc Lambert). Ronald was a loving and proud grandfather to Sarah (Ryan), Patrick, Kaitlynn (Tanner) and Jean-Luc and great-grandfather to Abigail, Quinton and Jack. Ronald was an only child, but became ‘big brother’ and family to Dorothy’s three younger sisters, Marilyn (Frank Legatto), Carol (Andrew Flett), and Charlotte (Gregory Land, predeceased). Ron truly enjoyed the friendship and comradery of his brothers-in-law. He was proud of all of his nieces and nephews and especially looked forward to his visits and dinner with Michael Legatto (predeceased) after his retirement.
With a twinkle in his eye, Ron referred to himself as ‘Sugar Daddy’; he worked at Lantic Sugar in Toronto as the sales and plant manager for 25 years and preferred his Tim Hortons black with 5 sugars. He had corporate and Federal Government consulting contracts and spent several years teaching Sales and Marketing at Sheridan College. Ron was a lifelong member of the Masons, Coronati Lodge 520, Master in 1964 and a very proud member of the United Empire Loyalists. He was an active member of the St. Andrew’s Thistledown Anglican Church and in 1976, graduated with an HBA in Economics from York University.
Ron was a man of many talents, one of which was ‘tinkering’. He took pride in never having to hire a repair person and was happy to help friends and family with their home projects. He had many hobbies and crafts; working with leather, natural stone and wood. Ron added genealogy, thai chi and water colour painting to his list of hobbies after retirement. His interest in cooking started with artisan bread and baked beans and later apples pies, cinnamon buns and progressing to delicious meals after Dorothy had a stroke in 1997. Ron lovingly cared for Dorothy in their home until she became a resident at The Harold and Grace Baker Centre in 2018 where Ron joined her in 2019.
Dad loved to share his knowledge and his experiences and to lend a helping hand to all. He loved day trips, vacations, home projects, his many hobbies and dinner and movie nights with Dorothy as well as get-togethers with family and friends. Every Father’s Day he enjoyed a mussel feast with Peter, Luc and Patrick and making a year’s supply of strawberry jam with Nancey. Dad especially enjoyed breakfast meetings with his lifelong friends from Trenton, Jim Kirk and Mack Robinson; sharing childhood memories with his dear cousin Rev. Gerald Morgan; and ‘big reds’ and bbq’s with the Cooke and Hawkins families. We’ll all have more coffee in the pot, and more sugar in the bowl now that Dad’s gone, but Dad’s lively conversation, his positive attitude and his generous spirit will never be replaced.
The family is grateful to the staff and PSWs at the Harold and Grace Baker Centre for providing compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
