Wayne Maxner, a beloved figure in the world of ice hockey, has passed away at the age of 80. He dedicated his life to the game; and his contributions to the sport will long be remembered by fans and players alike.
Born on September 27, 1942, Wayne’s passion for hockey was evident from a young age. As a player, Wayne’s skill and determination were remarkable, as he earned his way up through the ranks to a place on the Boston Bruins’ team. After retiring as a player, Wayne transitioned into coaching, where he truly made his mark. His exceptional knowledge of the game, combined with his ability to inspire and motivate his players, led to numerous successes, most notably with the Detroit Red Wings, the Windsor Spitfires, and the London Knights. Wayne’s leadership and coaching skills allowed him to mentor and guide many young players on to successful NHL careers.
Upon retiring after 45 years in hockey, Wayne also enjoyed a very successful second career selling cars in London, Woodstock and Goderich, finally settling in the Bayfield area.
Wayne is survived by his son Wayne (Kayo), daughter Shelley (Charles), stepdaughters Leigh (Brandon), and Averil (Marty), half brothers Alison and Charles, and half sister Sharon. His children, grandchildren and extended family were a source of immense joy and happiness for him. Wayne was predeceased by his parents, and his sister Ruth and brother John.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, and many who had the privilege of knowing him.
Arrangements have been made through Falconer Funeral Home in Clinton. Wayne has requested, in lieu of a funeral, that his ashes be returned home to Halifax where he first learned to skate on Chocolate Lake.
