Wayne James Delaney Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Delaney at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, NL on August 4, 2024 after a hard fought battle with cancer. Surrounded by his loving family, he was taken from us far too soon, at the age of just 68 years. Wayne was born in Stephenville, NL, son of Jerome and Marie (Lundrigan) Delaney and has lived in Stephenville his entire life.
Wayne leaves behind his loving wife, Sandi (Sharpe), sons Adam Delaney (Natasha), Allan Delaney (Jenna Loder), brothers Brian Delaney (Jean), Bob Delaney (Marina), sisters Maureen Jackson (Barry), Joan Delaney, many nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends.
Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Jerome and Marie Delaney, and his niece, Jenna Delaney.
Wayne was a prominent local businessman in Stephenville during his life, owning and operating Sportsworld and more recently, J.M. Delaney Lumber Ltd. He contributed to the community in many ways. He was a member of the Third Degree of the Knights of Columbus, President of Minor Hockey, volunteered his time to many committees/organizations and donated to local charities, sports teams and community organizations. Wayne had a widely known love of sports and excelled in hockey, soccer, softball and golf, achieving many championships and awards over the years. He coached several minor sports and successfully took the ladies ringette team all the way to national championships in Edmonton in 1982. An avid collector of sports memorabilia, Wayne’s collection would rival any other out there. His collection was so dear to him that it takes the place of a vehicle in his garage. Wayne loved drag racing his 1979 Camaro which he bought brand new back in the day and continued racing as recently as 2022. He was renowned in the drag racing world in NL, NS and NB, not only for his success but for the fun times he brought to all those who participated. Wayne also loved music and took up playing guitar later in life. He had a small band that practiced in his garage and volunteered their time and music playing in the senior’s homes in the area, which the seniors enjoyed immensely. Wayne had a way of brightening up a room with his jokes and his laughter, contributing to his being awarded Prom King in high school. His sense of humour and ability to light up a room will be something we will always remember. Wayne will be deeply missed by family, friends, colleagues, the Stephenville community and all who knew him.
Visitation will take place at Russell’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 7 from 2-4 p.m and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 8 at 2:00 p.m. St. Stephen’s Parish with interment to follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery, Hansen Highway, Stephenville.
The Delaney family would like to say a special thank you to the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital staff for the wonderful care they provided for Wayne. As expressions of sympathy, please send donations in Wayne’s memory to the Southwest Coast SPCA at www.swcspca.org or flowers.
