Parcourez la nécrologie de Wayne Hollingshead 1948 – résidant dans la province Colombie britanique pour le détail des funérailles
As dawn broke on the morning of June 12, 2023, Wayne Hollingshead peacefully passed away surrounded with love in Kamloops, BC. Born on July 6, 1948, in Welland Ontario to Jean and Kenneth and older sister, Sharon, Wayne was raised on the family farm. Life presented many challenges for Wayne, which he persevered through, but left a lasting impact on him.
He is survived by his children, Mandy, Jacquie (Jessie) and Geoff (Gillian), and his grandchildren: Sophia, Thea & Isabelle. Wayne is also survived by three former life partners, Barbara, Paul & Roger.
Wayne had a few childhood loves that stayed with him throughout his life, camping at Tea Lake in Algonquin Park, time spent in the garden with his grandmother and a love of animals that impacted his career in becoming a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. Moving to British Columbia in 1982, Wayne worked for Cariboo College as one of the first Animal Health Technology program instructors before retiring in 2008. His compassion for animals was prevalent among the students he taught and his children. Throughout his career, he served on many committees on various levels, including the BC Veterinary Medical Association, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, Veterinary Technician Testing Committee, American Association of Veterinary State Boards, Western Vet Tech Educators, Association of Veterinary Technician Educators, & Lesbian and Gay Veterinary Medical Association ensuring his voice was heard. He was not afraid to ruffle any feathers. His passion for anaesthesiology led to him co-writing a book for veterinary technologists that had three editions and was translated into Spanish. He had a high standard of challenging others (his students and his children) to ensure they consistently demonstrated their best. His students can speak to his Dr H “isms” that live on to this day, and his children have also inherited some of his passions.
Wayne shared his love of being a Canadian with his children, ensuring that road trips included history lessons and learning about being a Canadian first before we set off on our own to explore the rest of the world. He had the privilege of living in five provinces and, after retirement, wintering in Puerto Vallarta, where he enjoyed the warm climate and people.
Some final thoughts from Wayne: “Thank you to each of you for being part of my life – my friends, my family, my lovers. Each of you have touched me, and shaped me and I think made me a better person, in spite of my many imperfections. Thank you.”
Donations honouring Wayne can be made to the Dr. Hollingshead/Baird Bamford Anesthesia & Critical Care Award at Thompson Rivers University or to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation Cardiac Care fund.
As Wayne would not want sorrow, but instead for us to celebrate, we are holding an Open House to celebrate his nearly 75 years on Saturday, July 22, between 1-4 PM at West Highlands Community Centre in Kamloops, BC. Please RSVP online or by calling Mandy at (250) 372 3916
