Obituary
Passed away peacefully at home on SwissLine Farm in his son’s arms, on Monday September 11, 2023. It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Walter at the age of 93. Walter was a wonderful loving husband to the late Trudi of 66 years.
A loving “Dad” to Sandra (Steven) and Roland (Jeannine). A very proud “Opa” to Ryan (Samantha) and Madison. Walter will be missed by his sisters Ernalies and AnnaMarie and their families in Switzerland and his sister-in-law Kathy Egger, and son Peter (Mindy) and their family from Fergus.
Predeceased by his siblings, Norbert (Austria), Joe(Fergus), Margrith (Switzerland) and many nieces and nephews. Walter will be dearly missed by his extended family in Canada and Switzerland and his many friends. Walter’s dream was to farm when he immigrated to Canada, from Switzerland, with his wife Trudi in 1952. They both worked hard in various jobs, Walter in construction, until they could save enough money to buy what is now SwissLine farm, in Milton. This is where they both lived for the rest of their lives. Walter was always in a “hurry”, to check on a cow, to do fieldwork or to get ready after chores for ‘Jass’, a Swiss card game. He played cards with his friends and spent endless hours on his iPad until his last day. Walter was part of a female church choir for many years, his ‘booming’ voice could not be missed. Another passion was cutting wood and working in the bush. Anything to do with work outside and never get much rest.
Walter spent many of his days driving the 401-400 to go and check on his beef cows in Bradford. He would have done anything when it came to driving up to Bradford. Whether it was to feed the cows, rake the hay or even pull up the round baler behind the pick-up truck on the 401. As time moved on and Walter got a bit older, he spent endless hours during harvest following Roland’s footsteps, going from the truck to the grain buggy back to the combine. Walter never missed a footstep or an acre of fall harvest!
Walter enjoyed a good meal, especially if Trudi cooked it. Pies, ice cream, pastries Walter never said no. Walter liked to travel to Switzerland and other countries (South Africa, Hong Kong, Brazil, & USA). Somehow, he never had jetlag. Walter never made appointments when he visited places in Switzerland. He would just show up, unannounced. It seemed to work for him!
One of his greatest joys was his grandchildren, Ryan and Madison. He was always interested in their pursuits whether it be RTE Tree Service, Madison’s horseback-riding, or any of their overall interests. In Opa’s eyes they could do no wrong, his wallet was always open for them. Walter, as with many farmers, was always focused on the timing of things. Timing for cutting the hay whether it was making “may hay” or getting the crops planted was always a big deal. Walter’s timing was so perfect he was able to go peacefully to the day, a year apart from his late beloved wife Trudi.Opa and Trudi will never be forgotten as they both passed on Maddy’s birthday. The farm that Walter and Trudi began, is safely in the hands of the next generation of the Egger’s.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Sadera, Diane Lipari and nurse Guida (Prime Care Family Health Team) for the most amazing care over the years and for their help the hours before Walter’s passing. In addition, a HUGE thank you to the ComForCare Home Care Halton team (Vardan, Ashley and Sandra)and the amazing and dedicated caregivers (Shahpaar, Tanecia, Farida and Kashmir) who looked after Walter every day to make sure he was very well taken care of and provided the companionship he loved so much. He spent lovely unforgettable hours with these wonderful caregivers. THANK YOU.

Thursday September 14, 2023 from 7pm to 9pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday September 16, 2023 at Holy Rosary Parish, 139 Martin St., at 10am.
The Family wishes to invite everyone back to the SwissLine Farm for a Reception and a time of fellowship following the Mass.
Walter and Trudi will be laid to rest at the Milton Evergreen Cemetery.
