On May 20, 2024, Walter Edwin Howells, at 81, was peacefully Promoted to Glory at Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre with his wife and son at his side.
Walter was born to Harry and Winnifred Howells in Toronto, Ontario, on January 23, 1943.
Walter’s unwavering dedication to the Lord led him to become a Salvation Army officer in 1965. He was appointed to Men’s Social Services, serving communities across Canada. His work was impactful, and he retired as a Major, building on a long-lasting family legacy of Salvation Army Service.
Walter enjoyed many years of spending summers RV camping, often with his grandchildren. He also took them on memorable trips, like Toronto, New York, Disneyland, and a cruise. His active involvement in his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s lives was notable.
He was also a proud member of the Kiwanis Club across Canada and was, at one point, the chaplain for the Yarmouth Fire Department.
Walter’s love for his family was boundless. He leaves behind his beloved spouse, Barb Howells, his children and their spouses, Erik Howells and Diane Harder, Daughter in Law, Elsa Howells, Bryant Howells and Lorna Allenby, David Howells, Chrissy and Tony Doell, and James and Jennifer Howells. His sisters Shirley, Joyce, and Pearl also survive him. Walter’s legacy lives on through his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the center of his world.
We invite you to celebrate Walter’s remarkable life on June 1, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Salvation Army Community Church, 2621 Victoria Avenue, Thunder Bay. Your presence would mean a lot to us.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army’s Thunder Bay/Partners in Mission, a cause close to Walter’s heart.
