Parcourez la nécrologie de Walter Albrecht Tuesday October 10th 2023 résidant dans la province Colombie britanique pour le détail des funérailles
Walter was born February 28, 1930 in the farming community of Nadrybie, Poland. In 1938 he moved with his parents and 4 siblings to Saskatchewan where they lived for two winters before they moved to Mission, BC in 1940.
As the second born but oldest son of 9 children, Walter had lots of responsibilities growing up. He worked the family farm, and had various jobs including a paper route and picking hops.
Walter was a smart man but did not have the luxury of a formal education. After completing Grade 8 he needed to help out the family financially, and his Dad took him out of school to have him help build houses.
He began logging at the age of 16 and by age 19 Walter went to a logging camp in the Queen Charlottes (now Haida Gwaii).
In 1959 Walter travelled to Chicago, Illinois to court and eventually marry Emma Brauer. He happily adopted her 2 children Elsie and Doreen. Together they moved into a MacMillan Bloedel logging camp in Powell River. Walter built their first home when they moved to Port Coquitlam. When they returned to Powell River, Walter built their 2nd home.
In 1963 they moved to Squamish where Walter built their 3rd and final home but not quite in time for their son Michael to be born in July, 1964. Sadly, Walter lost his precious Emma in 1973. He never remarried.
Walter continued to work for MacMillan Bloedel running machinery until his retirement in 1985. Walter kept himself busy doing odd jobs or working in his workshop or out in the yard.
He loved pouring over his daily paper that he still got in newsprint, gardening, going to swap meets and “tinkering” (his word) in his workshop. Walter talked about the adventures he would one day take and did have a few. Walter loved to fly and got as far as soloing.
As a child of the depression, Walter was frugal and learned to fix just about anything and kept everything because you never knew when that screw or scrap of wood would come in handy.
No matter where he lived, Walter had a garden. While he loved roses and other flowers, his garden was primarily fruit and vegetables. He was as practical in his garden as he was with everything else.
As a carpenter, anything Walter built was solid and worked very well although esthetics was not Walter’s thing.
Walter never met a tool he didn’t like. He had almost every tool and multiples of each one but who really needs 7 drill presses, 3 identical table saws and 50 lbs of vice grips? Apparently, Walter did. This multiplicity didn’t just apply to tools in his workshop, it also applied to sewing machines, lawn mowers, boats, turntables, and headphones, to name but a few.
Walter was a frequent shopper at swap meets. He drove from Squamish to Cloverdale and Aldergrove almost every Sunday until the pandemic stopped him. Walter took his fashion cues from no one and could be recognized by his vests, hats and work shirts with snaps.
A man of few words but much love, Walter lived a full and happy (if a bit solitary) life. After a cancer diagnosis, he passed away peacefully 3 days later with Elsie and Doreen at his side.
In addition to his children Elsie (Wayne), Doreen and Mike (Leah), Walter leaves behind his sisters Margaret, Doreen, and Liz, 6 grandchildren – Clayton (Bridie), Curtis (Jennifer), Mandy (Jordan), Natalie (Ayren), Rachel (Paul), and Luke (Desiree) – as well as 11 great-grandchildren – Valeska, Isaac, Jasmine, Oliver, Paris, William, Alexander, Joseph, Michael, Louis and Desmond.
He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
Many thanks to the kind-hearted nurses and doctors at Squamish Hospital. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to his daughter Doreen and great-granddaughter Valeska who took such wonderful care of Walter and allowed him to live in his own home until almost the end.
A Celebration of Life will take place on November 25 at 1:30 pm at Hope Lutheran Church, 3151 York Street, Port Coquitlam.
In lieu of flowers, please try fixing something for someone else or tell Walter stories over a cup of Earl Grey tea.
In Walter’s words: “Take care!”
