It is with profound sadness that the family of William Garnet Maguire, 76, of Indian Path announces his passing on August 23, 2024 at the Mahone Nursing Home.
Born in Windsor, NS on July 20, 1948, Garnet was the second of three children born to Nellie Laura Watson and Clarence “Mick” Maguire.
He grew up in Woodville, Grand Pre, and Hantsport, and graduated from Horton District High School in 1967. Following high school, Garnet attended the Nova Scotia Institute for Technology in Halifax and became an electrical linesman following his studies, working for Nova Scotia Power, Riverport Electric Light Commission, and the Town of Mahone Bay throughout his career. It was during his travel work with Nova Scotia Power that he met Marie and they were married on November 6, 1971 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mahone Bay.
Garnet maintained a lifelong interest in sports, with a focus on soccer (a member of Horton’s Provincial B soccer championship squad in 1967 and a member of the Lunenburg County senior team’s exhibition tour of the United Kingdom in 1979), dirt bike racing, bowling, baseball, and hockey. A lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadiens, one of the highlights of his life was refereeing an exhibition hockey game in Lunenburg featuring Maurice Richard and other Canadiens alumni.
Having spent some of his formative years with his grandparents on their farm, Garnet rekindled that interest later in life by building a hobby farm of his own and working with sets of oxen. He became involved with the Maritime Ox Pulling Association and participated in ox pulls across the South Shore, most frequently at the South Shore Exhibition in Bridgewater.
One of Garnet’s favourite locations was Big Mush-a-mush Lake, and he loved spending summers at his cottage on the lake, surrounded by his family and his friends. Following a diagnosis with Lewy body dementia, it became more difficult for Garnet to lead his once-active life and he had to curtail many of the activities he enjoyed. He was cared for at home until the final month of his life.
Garnet is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marie; sons Hamilton of Mahone Bay, and Christian (Tara) of Blockhouse; grand-daughter Abigail; sister-in-law Della; nephews Shawn and Michael; and niece Stacey.
In addition to his parents, Garnet was predeceased by his brother Greg Maguire of Bishopville, his sister Debby Maguire of Greenwood, and his special aunt Joyce MacInnis of Hantsport.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Highway 3, Lunenburg, NS. In honouring Garnet’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will be held at the Old Blockhouse Cemetery, Highway 324, Blockhouse, NS on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at 2:00 pm, with Rev Lee Simpson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital Physiotherapy Department, Lunenburg, the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Halifax, or a charity of choice.
