Vivian L. Campbell — also known as Mom, Mommer, Grammy, Wiffy, Bids, and sometimes Viv! — started life on Oct. 19, 1928 while her parents H.W. Rattray and Jean (Rhodenizer) Rattray, with their first daughter, Jean, were making their home in Bridgewater.
H.W. was for many years in the employ of the Stedmans company; his responsibilities involved opening or managing a succession of stores throughout the Maritimes, which necessitated frequent moves for the household. Thus, Bridgewater gave way to Summerside, PEI; then it was back to Truro, followed by Wolfville, then Lunenburg. When the family, which now included son Dwight, made the next move, this one from Lunenburg to Kentville, Vivian stayed behind.
She had met and would marry Ian Campbell; together they raised a family and ran the business which was then known as Boscawen Manor. After the “nest” was empty, they moved to a house built for them in Maders Cove.
Lastly, widowed, Vivian moved alone back to Bridgewater where eventually she would reside at Ryan Hall. It was there that she died, late in the evening of Friday past, Sept. 29, 2023, lovingly watched over by a constellation of family members, some near, some far, in the place where she had been so well cared for during her final journey through the trials of dementia.
Vivian was much loved by that family that was watching over her. It has grown so that, now, in addition to her sister Jean Rattray and brother Dwight (Dorothy) Rattray, it includes her children Janis Campbell, Ian (Karen) Campbell, Cathy Conrad; her grandchildren J.B. Anderson, Kelly Campbell, Holly Riley, Adam (Samantha) Campbell, Breagh (Craig) Passmore; and nine great-grandchildren: Campbell, Oliver, Sullivan, Ruthie, Lennon, River, Olivia, Jack, and Ian. A particular name is missing from this list: it is a great irony that the disease that took so much from her also spared her the heartbreak of knowing that her grandson Kirk Conrad had predeceased her, as had her parents and her husband.
As is true of every one of us, she was a person of many parts. She loved the natural world; she adored animals, especially her dogs; she was quick-witted; she was fun; she was industrious; she had a wonderful sense of whimsy; she was loyal; she was creative. She also had her moments. Without question, there were things that made life hard for her. (What life doesn’t include hard things?) But the hard things didn’t define her. Except for one.
They say Alzheimer’s disease can show up for twenty years before it is diagnosed. It did. And if life with the disease goes on long enough, the person can be stripped of everything that makes them unique or gives them pleasure. She was. Almost. There is one thing that remained….
When she died, her family was caught between sorrow and relief. Relief, because she is set free. Sorrow, because we have never stopped loving her — and she could feel it — and we will miss her.
