Obituary
Vivian Jean Pretty (nee Newhook) passed peacefully away surrounded by her husband and children on November 22, 2024, at the age of 77.
Vivian was born on May 11, 1947, to Eric and Mary Newhook, the oldest of 11 children. As a young woman she was one of the first telephone operators in Norman’s Cove. In 1963, she met her husband Sam Pretty, and they were married on September 10, 1965.
Vivian loved chatting with everyone she met. She was known by many as someone who would do anything for anyone, from inviting strangers into her home for tea, to her famous saying “What was it I had to give you?” whenever a family member was leaving her house after a visit. She loved to knit and took great pride in her garden. She loved the Christmas season, volunteering as Mrs. Claus in the Trinity South Santa Claus Parade for 17 years. Vivian also loved getting a laugh out of everyone, sometimes even at her own expense, at which she would always respond, “I’m just making memories.” Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life.
Vivian was predeceased by her parents Eric and Mary; parents-in-law Clarence and Martha Pretty; brother Norman; sister Theresa; brothers-in-law Gordon Hudson, John Roberts, Glen Faulkner, Wilmore Pretty, Bruce Pretty and Wallace Pretty; sisters-in-law Lynn Newhook, Jean Cranford and Angela Smith.
Leaving to mourn are her loving husband of 59 years, Sam; children Kathy (Cecil), Ken (Wanda), Cindy and Lori (Brad); sisters Ruby (Clayton), Betty and Dianne; brothers Leslie (Coralee), Terry (Sandra), Larry (Beverly), Ken (Betty) and Bill; nine grandchildren Eric (Nina), Kristian (Kylie), Brittany (Shane), Jenelle, Brandon, Samantha, Sam, Jolene and Jordan; four great-grandchildren Levi, Madelynn, Leah, and Brooklynn; and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Siddiqui, Dr. Downton, Dr. Armstrong and the nursing staff of at the Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Howse and chemo staff at the Carbonear General Hospital. A very special thank you to Vivian’s Nurse Practitioner Cora Newhook for her extra care and compassion.
Visitation will take place at Warren’s Funeral Home in Dildo, on Monday, November 25, 2024, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm and Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
Memorial service will also take place at Warren’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 11:00 am.
Flowers are appreciated. Donations in Vivian’s memory will be distributed to families in need for Christmas (a final gift from Mrs. Claus).
