1945 – 2023
Virginia Tamiko Omori passed away peacefully on March 6, 2023, with her brother and sister at her side.
Virginia (Budgie) was born in Winnipeg in 1945. At the tender age of 5 she was declared by the local paper to be the prettiest child, but Virginia lived her life with the spirit of a tiger. Everyone who knew her appreciated her sense of humour, compassion, intellect, tenacity, and generosity. Throughout her life she strove to be helpful, loving and caring with her family, friends and clients. Of all her many accomplishments, she declared that helping to raise her 3 siblings has been her proudest achievement.
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and worked with various clients in several situations and capacities as a support and advocate for fair treatment.
Previous to Social work, Virginia was interested in nursing. It was at nursing school where she met her lifelong friends Viola, Trudy, Doreen and Lily. Through the many intervening years, right to the end, they have been steadfast supports for one along life’s bumpy road, never failing to mark the passing years with their birthday celebrations.
Virginia loved music, especially at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and summer Concerts at Assiniboine Park. She also looked forward to Ballet in the Park. At home she loved to read and watch her extensive collection of DVD’s. She was a frequent winner at BINGO and at Pull-tabs.
Aside from these interests and adventures, she was curious about world cultures and was an avid attendee at several Folklorama Pavilions. She was especially proud and knowledgeable about our Japanese culture. She was the most adventurous of us all, bravely travelling to Japan, and visiting and working in various Canadian locales.
As a sister and aunty, she was the best! Her eyes sparkled with joy when we visited, had a conversation, and when she received a card or gift from any of us. Virginia is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Linda; nephew, Christopher (Nicole); sister, Jane; niece, Aimee; Grand-nephews, Luca and Cayde.
Virginia has been predeceased by our parents, Charles and Mary; youngest brother, Harry; and niece, Christianne.
We would like to extend a special note of gratitude to Kiwanis Metropolitan Residence for welcoming Virginia to their facility with warm and generous support. Also, we extend appreciation to the many health care professionals at various hospitals, to community services, and clinics who helped Virginia. Although her stay was at Poseidon Care Home was brief we appreciate the compassionate care given to Virginia during her final days. Finally, a note of appreciation to a Jim Omori and family for their kind and loving care of Virginia.
Virginia will be interned in the Spring. Please check with Voyage after May 1 for the date of the Service.
