Virginia Mary Macaulay
(nee Gatward)
1926 – 2023
Virginia passed away in her sleep on October 31st, 2023, in Lindsay Ontario at the age of 97. Born March 24, 1926 at Walkerville Ontario to Albert Norman and Sarah Mae Gatward. As a child of the Depression her parents moved frequently searching for work. They finally put down roots in Oakland, near Brantford Ontario where she met and married Norman “Gale” Macaulay (deceased 2020) in 1945. There they had 4 daughters: Joan (Bob), Christine (Dave deceased), Rev. Ellen-Gale (deceased) and Marilyn. Gale built their first house on his parents’ land. They stayed in that “war time house” until moving to a Centennial farm south of Brantford in 1965 and then later into Brantford. Their happy marriage lasted 74 years.
Virginia was a busy lady. During WWII she worked in payroll at Kitchen Overall. As a housekeeper and a mother of four she took pride in sewing all the girls’ clothes and becoming a great cook. A favorite creation was a flambe dessert on special occasions. Her lifelong love of books and reading was instilled into her girls taking them to the Brantford Library every Saturday. She became a leader in the Oakland 4H Club, a member of the Oakland United Church and Treasurer for the Ladies Auxiliary at All Saints Anglican Church in Mt. Pleasant. She was also employed at Gunther Mele and Koehring Waterous in Brantford. A long-time member of the Brantford Potters Guild and the Broderers Club, she produced a very large volume of creative work. She took real estate and gourmet cooking courses at Mohawk College and achieved a Fine Arts certificate at age 66.
For fun she and Gale loved to dance to Big Band and Disco music, play golf and travel internationally with close long-time friends (the Birthday Gang) including memorable sailboat cruises to the Caribbean.
Virginia was a loving and proud Grandmother to Jessica (Arron), Michelle (Matt), Daniel (Amanda), Clair and Kirsten and Great Grandmother to Fiona, Reagan, Liam, Logan, Hunter and Sophia.
She was very thankful to the following for making her and Gale’s last few years comfortable: all their immediate family, Susanne and Mike, Jim and Neil, Linda, Kim and Gail, neighbours on Goods Lane, all staff of Adelaide Place Retirement Home and in the Geri/Palliative wing at Ross Memorial Hospital, Lindsay.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a Celebration of Life and Interment in Mt. Pleasant, near Brantford, in the spring of 2024. Notice to follow.
