Our dear Mother / Nana/ Great Nana left us on November 16th on the wings of a Dove for the arms of her Lord and Saviour . She had lived an astonishing 103 happy years and was three weeks shy of her 104th birthday.
Mom ( Violet Ivy ) was born December 7,1919 to Matilda and Ernest Thurston in Sudbury along with her twin sister Lily Rose. Her parents passed away and she was adopted in 1927 by Clara and Delmer Andress while her sister was adopted by another family. She also had 4 brothers Stanley, Arthur, Ernest and Victor who entered the workforce as well as a sister Frances who contracted TB and spent 3 years in the Hamilton Sanatorium.
Fortunately the twins remained in Sudbury and could see each other often . They were very close friends and thanks to Doreen Bryer, Helen’s daughter, there were frequent reunions mostly in Thunder Bay but one as far away as Cuba.
Nana Andress introduced Mom to the Church of the Epiphany where she joined the Junior Auxiliary, the Church Choir and later the Young Women’s Evening Auxiliary . Mom went to the Whitby Ladies College and then to North Bay Normal School to train as a teacher after which she taught junior grades in Capreol and Sudbury .
She was introduced by Hilda Thomson Mitchell to our Father and they married in the Church of the Epiphany July 3rd,1947 . Thereafter they moved to Port Arthur where Dad was in charge of St Michael and all Angels and assistant to The Rev J.S. Smedley at St John’s .
Elizabeth was born and then Michael after which the family moved in 1952 to Bracebridge to St. Thomas Church returning to the church of St. John the Evangelist on Pearl Street in 1957.
Mom continued to supply teach but was actively involved in each church through the Junior Girls’ Auxiliary, singing in the choir with her beautiful alto voice as well as being co-President, with her good friend Elsie Dumbrell, of the Anglican church women. In addition she drove for the Cancer Clinics, was involved with the Red Cross Blood Drive and later drove for Meals on Wheels for 30 years being recognized by the City for her Volunteer work.
Dad retired in 1973 after 16 years at St John’s but promptly took over the Missions to Seamen. Mom and Dad had 15 wonderful winters at their home in Mesa, Arizona surrounded by many other snowbirds from Thunder Bay and elsewhere. Mom was able to pursue her love of golf both in Mesa and back home at the Port Arthur Country Club. She was a prize winning golfer as well as the one who would find all the balls that everyone else lost in the rough!
Mom was predeceased by her four brothers and one sister Fran as well as her niece Lyn and her husband, The Rev Canon Alvin J Thomson in 1993.
Surviving Mom are Elizabeth ( Kishore ) Hong Kong , Michael ( Sandra ) in St. Catharines, beloved grandchildren Shanna ( Matthew ) Carlisle, James in Hong Kong and Simmi ( Kris ) in Victoria B.C. as well as Great Grandkids Trevor Brock and Evelyn Violet. Also surviving Mom is her twin sister Lily Rose ( Helen Bryer ) in North Bay and many nephews and nieces throughout Canada and the USA.
We are very grateful to the wonderful, caring and compassionate staff at Pioneer Ridge where Mom resided for the last years of her life and especially to Crystal and Shannon who ensured that, despite Mom’s hearing and sight loss, she was included in many fun activities. Elizabeth and Mom enjoyed Bingo every Tuesday despite Mom’s protestations that she did not know how to play!
We would like to thank Archdeacon Deborah Kraft and The Rev Ann Camber who came to Mom’s side frequently and importantly at the end of her life . Church was a vital part of Mom’s life and she lived the precepts of the church daily, always helping others and offering a hand to anyone in need.
A very special thanks to Abby who was Mom’s companion and brought her much joy, to Carol who rushed to Mom’s bedside near the end of her life, Sylvia a faithful visitor and Jessica as well as the many neighbours at McVicar Estates who regularly joined Mom for a glass of wine before she moved to a retirement home .
Mom wrote most of this obituary and has left us notes as to what hymns she wants at her service. Mom and Dad organized their funerals and last wishes in 1990.
We will organize a Celebration of Mom’s life in the summer when we hope that many of the family can gather to remember their Nana and Great Nana after a remarkable life, lived to the fullest with joy and an abiding belief .
