Obituary
“Life is an adventure to be travelled.” Victor “Vic” Serafino Masi, passed away on Thursday, September 28th in the arms of his beloved family. At the golden age of 93, or “93 and a half,” as he liked to say, Vic leaves behind a beautiful legacy of four children, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. We will always deeply cherish Vic’s kind and fun-filled approach to life.
Born in Hamilton on April 6, 1930 to Nicola Masi and Mary-Josephine Gustiana, Vic was the eldest of three children. He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Vollick in 1951. They were married for 30 years until Joyce’s death in 1981.
Following high school, Vic took over the family business in Hamilton, Masi Travel Service, and had a successful career in growing the business and traveling the world. He shared this love of travel and his interest in other cultures with his children.
Upon his retirement, Vic moved to the family cottage on Lake of Bays, which became the site of many happy family gatherings over the years for all the generations. We will never forget the glorious laughter and fun we had in being together with him.
Vic developed a deep love of nature through his search for meaning in life. He believed that all the beauty in the world could be seen in a falling leaf. The simple things in life brought him the most joy, whether that was meeting a new great-grandchild for the first time or spotting the first grosbeak bird in the spring. Caring for nature was important to him, as he volunteered in stewardship with the lake and trails.
Vic was both a teacher and a student of life. He wasn’t a man of many words, but the words he did use were meaningful and wise. He lived his life with a deep gratitude and humility and his gentle, yet steadfast support of his family and friends will always be remembered.
A talented super-athlete, Vic played for the Hamilton Junior Tiger-Cats the year the team won the 1950 Canadian Junior Football Championship and was a member of the Cathedral High School Oarsmen sculling team, winning various championships. He also competed in international Master’s Track meets and became a ski instructor at Hidden Valley during his retirement after he moved to Lake of Bays.
Vic loved to share his passions with others, patiently teaching, sharing, and inspiring the grandchildren and others in athletic skills, all the while making them feel safe.
A person of great faith and spirit, Vic was an active member in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus in Huntsville. His undying faith and loyalty also carried through to his relationships with his family.
Vic met the second sweetheart of his life, Joan Ranson, at church in Huntsville and the two experienced a loving 20 years together. Their common bond was their love for family and Vic was embraced with open arms by Joan’s children and grandchildren.
Vic learned to navigate the twists and turns of aging in the course of life and he fundamentally believed that life is good, with all of its successes and failures, in joy and in pain.
Vic passed away peacefully from a stroke at Algonquin Grace Hospice in Huntsville.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Ranson of Huntsville, his brother, Gerald Masi of Italy, his sister, Mary Kiss of Hamilton, his children; Victoria Masi of Lake of Bays, Gregory Masi of Niagara, Kenneth Masi of Ancaster and Geraldine Masi of British Columbia, his grandchildren; Joyce Iacoviello, Christine Masi, Irene Lowden, Nicholas Masi and Carolyn Saunders, his great-grandchildren; Avana, Darcy and Cyrus Lowden, Julian and Caleb Iacoviello, Weston and Finley Masi and Grady Saunders.
The family is very grateful for the exceptional care that Vic received at Algonquin Grace Hospice and Huntsville District Memorial Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Algonquin Grace Hospice.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, October 5th at 11am at St. Mary’s Catholic of the Assumption Parish, 12 Centre St. in Huntsville, Ontario P1H 2K8. The mass will be followed by lunch and refreshments with the family.
Interment to follow at a later date in Hamilton.
