Vernon Sauder of Elmira passed away peacefully at the age of 102 on Saturday, September 9, 2023. We are saddened by his death, but celebrating his meaningful life and honouring his incredible legacy.
Dad is deeply missed and lovingly remembered by children Brenda (Gary) Leis, Brian (Wendy) Sauder and Mary Lou (Randy) Wagler all of Wellesley. Treasured Grandfather and adored great-Grandfather of Shauna Leis and Kirk Bergey (Megan and Erik), Nathan and Jill Steckley Leis (Abbie and Norah), Brandon and Bethany Leis (Madeline, Amelia, Ezra), Shane Hallman and Amy Dewulf, Melissa and Todd Metzger (Matthew, Katie, Ryan, Ben Henry), Jonathan Sauder and Brittany Keiffer (Emberly and Liam), Trent Wagler and Jill Ropp (Kiera (2006), Tori, Tanner) Jared Wagler and Katherine Henke (Ada, Eli, Lea). Fondly remembered by nieces, nephews & their families, and many who have camped and fished with Uncle Vernie.
Vern is predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Erma (Gingrich) in 2005, parents Ezra and Sarah (Housser) Sauder, siblings Lena Feick, Lewis Sauder (Erma Martin, Mabel Snyder), Clayton Sauder (Naomi Snider), brother-in-law Earl S. Feick, and sisters-in-law Minerva Martin (Emil), and Leona Thomson (Leonard Shantz, Hugh Thomson).
Vern was an avid hunter and fisherman appreciating nature and God’s creations through hiking, camping, canoeing, biking and cross-country skiing; more recently 3 wheeling the G2G trail. He enjoyed many hours on his porch visiting and sharing stories with friends, family and neighbours between naps. In his early years he was employed at the Elmira Shirt factory, Elmira Purity and Borden Dairy, and Wes Brubacher Construction, before retiring from his custodial position at EDSS. Vern would claim he attended EDSS for 14 years but never graduated.
He was a generous volunteer for Woolwich Meals on Wheels, the local Blood Donor Clinic and Habitat for Humanity. He was a faithful member of Elmira Mennonite Church, contributing as a MYF sponsor, Boys Club and Stewardship Committee. He enjoyed Men’s Coffee Group, crokinole in St. Jacobs and many Woolwich Senior events with his companion Naomi Brubacher (2016). Those who knew Vern appreciated his gentle warmth, patience, quick wit and quiet strength. He always expressed his gratitude and felt blessed with his longevity and health.
The family would like to thank friends and neighbours who supported Dad in his home, with special thanks to Grace and Ruth and the community nursing care.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 from 1-2 p.m. at Elmira Mennonite Church, 58 Church St. W, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. The service will be livestreamed and available to view on Vernon’s tribute page of the funeral home website. A reception will follow the service.
Donations to Elmira Mennonite Church or House of Friendship may be made through the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira.
