Vernon Leroy Bellegarde

Vernon Leroy Bellegarde was born to Joseph and Katherine Bellegarde on November 19, 1940. He grew up with his parents and siblings on Little Black Bear First Nation. He attended Grade 1 – 12 at Lebret Residential School. He married Doreen Keewatin in 1967 and together they had four children: Murray, Gail, Lyle, and Pam. In 1983, Verne married Donna Anderson, and together they raised four sons: Michael, Shane, Cameron, and Joey.
Some of the many jobs Verne had over his lifetime included employment as a steelworker, a teacher’s aide, and a child care worker. He also served as the First Vice Chief of the FSIN, the Chief of Prairie Treaty Nations Alliance, worked for TFHQ, and served as the Administrator of the Lebret Residential School until its closing in 1998. In 2020 he was appointed as a Senator for the FSIN. Throughout his life Verne sat on many boards and committees including SaskPower and Regina Treaty/Status Indian Services. His work advocating for the Treaty Rights of Indigenous peoples took him across Canada, to Europe and to South America.
Verne loved sports and excelled at them all. In 1958 he won the Tom Longboat award. He was well known locally for his years playing hockey with the Melville Millionaires and the Balcarres Broncs, leading Balcarres to 2 Provincial Championships. He played ball with the Little Black Bear Blues and with Beardy’s during the years that he lived in Saskatoon. He was also a lover of crossword puzzles, animals, a good laugh, and anything made with brown sugar.
Verne was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Katherine Bellegarde, brothers George, Clarke, Morley, sisters Anita, Loretta, first wife Doreen, daughter Gail, grandsons Justin and Joey, and granddaughter Taylor. Verne leaves behind his siblings Margaret, Jean, Gordon and his second wife Donna. He leaves his remaining children, Murray, Lyle (Raylene), Pam, Michael (Susanna), Shane (Miranda), Cameron (Cara). He also leaves, his adopted son Gordon, adopted daughter Janine (Steve).
Verne leaves behind 26 Grandchildren, 14 Great grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
Along with his immediate family, Verne leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces, and countless friends. May you all find comfort in his memories.
