Obituary For Vernon Douglas Thorpe
June 17, 1954 – November 19, 2024
Vernon passed away on Tuesday, November 19th, 2024, after a lifetime struggle with Diabetes.
He was born to loving parents Garfield and Ruth Thorpe of Debolt, Alberta. He graduated from Ridgevalley High School where he played basketball, hockey, curling, and track and field. Vernon married Della Robertson on August 23, 1975. Vernon then went on to graduate from Fairview Trade School as a carpenter. Vernon worked in construction for 40 years working on many homes and commercial projects in Grande Prairie and surrounding Peace Region. He was most proud of the completion of Demmitt Hall and the Valleyview Co-op Store. Vernon was very well known and respected by all trades. His work was always completed to perfection. Vernon was very artistic, creative, and a problem solver.
Vernon was blessed with two beautiful children Adair Thorpe Barker (Husband Kenny Barker) and Bryce Thorpe (Erin Nykolaychuk), and the wonderful grandchildren Tillie, June, and Aiden. He took great joy in watching them grow.
Vernon loved the outdoors and was happinest in the bush camping, quadding, fishing, and hunting. Many hours were spent just sitting by a good campfire sharing stories and a good drink. He enjoyed quadding with his group of friends that loved the outdoors as much as he did.
Vernon had taken up bow target shooting and spent many hours fine tuning his shot. He also loved the company of friends at Tim’s, enjoying a good coffee, companionship, and conversation.
On November 19th, our family lost a lifetime friend, companion, husband, father, Grandpa, uncle, and brother. He will be greatly missed for his sense of humor, interesting ideas and point of view, an awesome mustache, a beautiful smile, and most of all the many, many Dad jokes.
A Celebration of Life will be held in June 2025. Time and place will be announced at a later date.
