Vern Mayhew Obituary
MAYHEW, Vern Clarke
Passed away peacefully at Hospice Peterborough on Sunday February 18th, 2024. Predeceased by parents Vern & Jeanne (nee McMahon) Mayhew. Clarke is now at rest with his late wife of 41 years Elizabeth “Betty” Mayhew (nee Twa). Survived by cherished wife Edith McKinlay (nee Moore). Clarke leaves behind daughter Erica Mayhew & grandson Quin. Survived by siblings Gail Neiman (the late David), Wilma Robinson (Hald) & Denver Mayhew (Marie). He will be missed by his step-daughters Luanne (Jambu) & Jill (Steffan) & their families, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family & friends.
Clarke was born on the family farm near Maple Leaf, Ontario on September 21st, 1942. After his high school graduation from NHHS, he moved to Peterborough for teachers college & began his career at Confederation PS, followed by a few years at Highland Heights. In 1967 he married Betty (Twa) Kuno & they moved to Cedar Valley with his step-son, Jeff. This was around the same time he began his dream job as an industrial arts (shop) teacher at Adam Scott, a position he held for 25 years. Erica was born in 1969.
A few years after Betty’s 2008 death, Clarke was blessed again and married Edith McKinlay in 2016. They were very happy together and stayed busy with tickets to see the Petes & the Lakers, as well as taking regular trips to the cottage near Maple Leaf.
Clarke dedicated much of his time to community service. He was an Anglican Church lay reader from age 15, founding member of Millbrook Food Share (25 years) and joined the Masonic Lodge in 1982. To thank him for his efforts, Clarke was awarded the 2007 Melvin Jones Fellow community award by the Lions Club, a 2012 Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal & was a 2020 recipient of the Order of the Diocese of Toronto.
As per Clarke’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a Visitation held at Saint Thomas Anglican Church (16 Centre Street, Millbrook Ontario) on Saturday March 2nd, 2024 from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Service will begin at 1:00 PM. There will be a time of fellowship after the service in the reception hall of Saint Thomas Anglican Church. Family and friends are welcome to join in remembering the life of Clarke.
Interment will take place in the spring at Emmanuel Cemetery.
Memorial donations can be made to Saint Thomas Anglican Church Maintenance Fund, Millbrook Masonic Lodge (Branch 97) or The Canadian Cancer Society. (Donations will be accepted online or by cheque only.)
