Umberto passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 29th, 2023 at Sunnybrook Hospital at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Pettorano Sul Gizio province of L’Aquila in the Abruzzo region of central-southern Italy.
Family
Beloved son of Panfilo and Giuseppina, devoted husband of the late Pina (nee Serra) and father of Nino (Susan) and Josie (Dario) and cherished Nonno of Gloria, Aurora, Augustin, Maximilian, Stefania, and Xavier. Dear brother of Anna (Beppino), Agnese (Carmine), Mera (Pietro), Tonino (Irene) and Mariella (Joe) and brother-in-law of Bruno (Natalina) and Franco (Anna) and loving uncle, cousin, and friend to many others.
Legacy
A kind, caring and loving man, Umberto dedicated his life to his family and friends. When Umberto was 8 years old, he was pulled away from school to help his father with lumberjacking, sheepherding.and other tasks in the mountains. He recalled a memory from his teenage years, instead of getting paid for goats’ milk/and or cheese from a villager he received some Italian acoustic guitar songbooks and magazines/books about the American cinema and movie stars. With these songs Umberto and his friends would circulate around the town serenating the beautiful women (one of whom would be his future love Pina Serra) from the street below. In 1958 he decided to leave Italy and go to Caracas, Venezuela to stay with his Uncle and cousins in order to earn a living. His very first job was selling ice cream from town to town with his moped. During a ride to sell his gelato he noticed some light, sparks, and smoke from a shop. He was enthralled by this magic called welding which led him to his next adventure in Toronto, Canada. In
the early 1960’s, he came to Canada and began his welding career at the Canada Chair Company. Although he was an accomplished welder, he decided to attend Welding school after work to be fully licensed at his trade. A hard-working man, Umberto found a part-time job in the evenings and weekends making outdoor Christmas decorations after working a full-time job during the day. When he wasn’t working, he loved cooking polenta, singing, playing cards, and recounting stories with a good espresso.
After retirement, his greatest love was his grandchildren. He loved watching them grow up and achieve many accomplishments. Nonno Berto, as he was affectionately called also liked watching sporting events with his grandchildren. Whether it was the Leafs, gli Azzurri, or the Dallas Cowboys.
Umberto will be deeply missed by those who were blessed to have known and loved him.
